The Sardinia region
Alghero is steeped in history dating back to the early Stone Age. Alghero descends from the Catalan period and still hold its traditions in the language that is spoken by the locals & the food. The local dish is Paella in Alghero.
Alghero has two of the largest vineyards in Italy producing two of the most well known wines in Italy. Sella Mosca & Santa Maria Palma. Sella Mosca has a daily tour of the wine cellars & a small tasting afterwards, defiantly a tour to take for all those wine buffs........& it is free.
Additionally the car rally "coral tour" starts & finished from Alghero, normally with a great attendance.
There are a lot of "Agro tourism" (restaurants) available in the local area that will allow you taste traditional foods that have been reared or grown on the land.
Also dotted in the smallest of places are all the beautiful old churches, included is the beautifully coloured dome of San Michele which can be seen from most places in the Old town. Around most corners you will find piazzas with bars & small cafes to enjoy a small break as you wonder around the winding streets and shops. The large church that dominates the bastions is well worth a visit its called San Margerita (Duomo).
If you don't fancy seeing the sights all on foot then there is a "Catalan Train" that can take you through the tour to save your feet. This leaves from the port.
The port holds over 2000 boats now, private & well as charters. We have Cruise liners that dock also.
The boat trips from the port are Neptune's Caves, See dolphins, snorkelling & diving. The coastlines of Alghero have some of the best diving in the world!
The evenings you can dine in a full selection of restaurants, go dancing in some clubs, walk the passagiata with an ice cream, go Go Karting, bowling or simply set up camp in bar for the night.... the choice is yours.
Alghero beach...Lido is the rated No:2 out of the 345 beaches throughout the whole of Sardinia!!!!.
It is long and sandy, warm with waters that are shallow & safe. The umbrella area have the services of a shower, toilet, life guard, some have small bars attached too.
There are some small rocks as a water break that better swimmers can go out to, or you can hire pedalos, canoes, kayaks, have floats or banana chairs to sit in, some section of the beach have children's toys, slides, swings & houses to play in included in the beach price, or simply while away days on the sun loungers under an umbrella trying to decide which ice cream to have later.
The Pinetta area and beaches is a short 15 min drive -this is an area that is covered by pine trees & this has sand dunes for sitting in & playing on.
Smaller beach Punta Negra as you come back into Alghero
Alghero is only a short max 15 mins drive to the first section of golden sandy beaches
Porto conte is within the National Park area, also has great walking trails, mountain biking, running, jogging , through the woodlands with different picnic points through out. Stunning Capocaccia views with these walks: Varying walk lengths: Also WW2 old bunkers & fortresses remaining on the headland as well as great local flowers and wildlife.
The Porto Conte beach has beautiful white sandy beach only a short walk away, it is also the area for the Porto Conte hotel.
There are tennis courts that can be hired out by non residence.
On the road back into Alghero you will also pass the beaches Le Bombarde & Lazzeretto, these are Mugoni have beach services, loungers & umbrellas, bars, toilet & shower facilities. Also these beaches have free beach sections where you can take your towels and crash!
Also in this area and the road into Alghero , is the Primavera Nuraghe which are ancient settlement ruins, which you can tour:
Alghero has the magical Old town with it churches, quaint shops and bars, great people watching and a great selection of different food.
The Old Bastion walls have commanding views out to sea, another great walk after dinner with the sun setting:
