The Sardinia region
Situated in the middle of the Meditteranean sea, Sardinia is one of the most popular destinations for people who love aquatic sports and seaside holidays. The sea around this island is the most beautiful and transparent in the world. Sardinia is, in the words of DH Lawrence, "lost between Europe and Africa and belonging to nowhere". This island while with its own distinct language and customs, is still unmistakably Italian. It is the Mediterranean's biggest island after Sicily, with many diverse faces. From the upmarket and cosmopolitan Costa Smeralda to the rugged mountains and the beautiful beaches on the coastlines, Sardinia has something to offer to everyone.
Alghero area
Alghero is an ancient medieval city, with Catalan influences. Its old walled town has similarities to old town Barcelona & Dubrovnik. Alghero is a rare Italian phenomenon, a tourist town boasting a flourishing fishing port. Situated on the Riviera del Corallo there is much to see and do in Alghero. The old walled town, with its narrow streets, medieval churches and its late night shopping, has many fine bars and restaurants. When in Alghero, a must see is a trip to the Grotto di Nettuno, accessible by land or boat (and frequently accompanied by schools of dolphins!). Also, hillwalking, tennis, diving and cycling are very popular with visitors. The wild Alghero Bosa coastline warrants a leisurely trip, taking stops at secluded beaches along the way. For entertainment there are many festivals throughout the year, the most popular being Carnival, Ferragosto and Sagra dei Pescatori. Eating in Alghero offers a diversity of menus and restaurants. Banquet on local seafood, where lobster, sea urchin and bottarga (hard smoked roe) are specialities. Andreinis restaurant, in the old town offers haute cuisine developed from traditional Sardinian dishes. Try the local wines, many of them are excellent.
How to get there
Fly (Ryanair) to Alghero from London Stanstead, or Frankfurt Hahn & flights available from Dublin, Ireland to Alghero,Sardinia. Apartment Ariel is a 7 minute drive from Alghero Airport Local buses run regularly between the airport, the apartment and the town. Local taxis are always available.
