Self-catering apartment only metres from the sea, ideally placed in Alghero's beautiful old town where you can sample its fantastic restaurants, cafe-bars and shops and stroll around its ancient sea walls and narrow, fascinating, cobbled streets. No car is needed. There is a wonderful fish and vegetable market within easy walking distance and a bakery around the corner, selling daily fresh bread and cakes. This 1st floor apartment has a newly fitted, well equipped kitchen with an integrated fridge and a gas hob. It has its original terracotta floor tiles and original beams. There are 2 bedrooms in the alcoves which have curtains for some privacy. One has a double bed (with the option of making it into 2 singles) and the other has 2 single beds. The main room has a sofa, an antique wardrobe, a table with seating for 4 and the kitchen at the other end. There is an air conditioning unit. There is a 4 piece shower-room with a powerful shower. We provide FREE wi-fi, linen and beach towels.

Ryanair operate flights to Alghero from Stansted, Luton, Dublin, Girona, Madrid, Brussels Stockholm, Goteborg, Oslo, Billund, Frankfurt (Hahn), Dusseldorf, Munich, Dortmund, Eindhoven, Bratislava, Ancona, Bergamo, Cuneo, Parma, Pisa, Rome, Verona, Venice (Treviso), Trieste and Milan. Easyjet also fly to Olbia from Gatwick, Bristol, Berlin, Basel, Paris (Orly), Geneva, Lyon and Milan (Malpensa). Olbia is about a 11/2hour drive. Buses meet flights at Alghero airport to take you to Alghero Centre. You need to buy the ticket from inside the terminal building before getting on the bus. Taxis cost about €25-30. There are lots of car hire companies at the airport (Hertz, auto europe, avis, europcar, Easycar,Sardinya to name a few)

The buses are cheap and frequent and go to various beaches in the area. Orange buses go locally and blue buses further afield. The tourist information office is extremely helpful and have bus timetables.

Alghero has a very high reputation for it's restaurants. Sardinia also has lots of 'Agriturismi', these are farms where homemade, homegrown produce is served in the local way. You will see such dishes on the menu as wild boar (cinghiale), porcetto (suckling pig), culungiones (potato filled pasta), spit roast lamb, fresh ravioli, seadas (a large ravioli like cheese filled dessert served with the local famous honey) and lots of cured meats. It is a foodies paradise, top quality, local, in season ingredients, expertly cooked and simply served!

Sardinia is famous for it's horsemen and it is possible to go trekking around Alghero and further afield. There is also a go-cart track on the outskirts of Alghero. There is a water park in Sorso Marina on the north coast which is a 40 minute drive away. In August the poulation of the island swells to more than double when Italians from the mainland arrive for their summer holidays. They have kept Sardinia a well kept secret for years! Sardinia has many festivals, an opportunity for each village to show off it's traditional costume. Some of the most famous are that of Sa Sartiglia near Oristano at Carnival time (usually February) , S'Ardia horse race where riders are bare-backed and the Easter celebrations of Alghero. Alghero has open air concerts throughout July and August in it's piazzas and old cloisters.

The Sardinia region

Sardinia isn't a mainstream Mediterranean destination but a sophisticated Italian island, west of mainland Italy and south of Corsica. With over 1000 miles of unspoilt coastline, it is renowned for beautiful beaches, clear azure blue sea and fascinating rock formations. Yet being the second largest island in the Mediterranean it has so much more to offer with an interesting history, for example, there are around 7,000 'Nuraghi', (mysterious stone dwellings dating back 3,500 years) throughout the island which serve as a permanent reminder of its prehistoric occupation, as well as numerous examples of Roman architecture as a catalogue of their dominance. It has a wild mountainous interior, vibrant towns with local traditions and colourful festivals throughout the year.

The cuisine offers a rich repertoire of dishes, heavily influenced by the country's various neighbours including Corsica and Italy, accompanied by impressive local wines. The mixing of game and farm produce (traditional with inland towns) and fish and seafood (famous in Alghero) result in a combination of flavours and appearance that is unique to Sardinia.

Near to Alghero is the lovely unspoilt Punta Giglio with marked walking and cycling trails and picnic benches which is a pleasure to visit all year round. A warm welcome awaits you in Sardinia where the people are warm and friendly.

"Well equipped central apartment"

Reasonably priced central apartment close to many restaurants and bars. Weather was still very warm in November and we had a really nice few days break. No need for a car as the apartment was easy to find on foot. The owner sent us clear directions to get to the apartment from the airport using the local bus - it only took a short time and was very straightforward. If you do hire a car, there is free public parking close by. Although the apartment is small, it was well equipped and could sleep 4 people comfortably. Highly recommended.
