The Mallorca/Majorca region
Majorca (Spanish and Catalan: Mallorca) is the largest island of Spain. It is located in the Mediterranean Sea and part of the Balearic Islands archipelago .The capital of the island, Palma, is also the capital of the autonomous community of the Balearic Islands. An efficient system of buses connects Palma to all the main towns in Mallorca, and there are also number of more local routes.
The best way to see the coastline, and particularly reach some of the remoter coves which are inaccessible by road, is by boat. One of the most popular trips goes around the northwest coast from Port de Soller to Sa Calobra .The east coast of Mallorca consists of more than fifty secluded coves of enormous beauty. Mallorca's north east coast has an enormous bay which is home to the popular resorts of Can Picafort and Alcudia.
Nearer the island's most northerly point at Cap de Formentor is Puerto Pollensa which has long been a favourite with holidaymakers. This whole area is very popular with cyclists, walkers and birdwatchers
Alcudia / Port Alcudia area
The original old town of Alcudia is 2 miles inland from the coastal development, and it is certainly worth a visit during your stay with parts of the town dating back to around 1300. What visitors may not realise however, is that it was the Phoenicians and Greeks who first settled here, closely followed in the 2nd century BC by the Romans, who made Alcudia the capital of the island.
Visitors to the Old Town today enter the narrow streets through one of the two gates that were constructed, along with the impressive city walls, after the conquest of the island by King Jaime I of Spain. The best way to fully appreciate this side of Alcudia is to take the 2 hour guided walking tour that is organised by the local tourist office every Wednesday starting at noon.
Alcudia is a good quality mainstream beach resort, which is especially suitable for families. The beach has more than 7 km from length of white and thin sand. This one is the major beach of the Illes Balears.
