The Mallorca/Majorca region
The island of Mallorca (Majorca) off the east coast of Spain is the largest in the Balearic Island group, which collectively form one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world, and certainly in the Mediterranean. Mallorca took off as a tourist Mecca in the 1960s, when a development boom spawned the building of hundreds of high-rise hotels, apartment blocks and shopping centres which now line most of the island's coast.
The capital, Palma, however still retains some of its historical flavour sporting grand mansions and a magnificent Gothic cathedral in its bustling centre. The northwest coast, too, still offers some secluded coves below the peaks of the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, and several quaint old towns and villages.
If you visit Mallorca for the sun and fun, it is worth taking a break from the beach resorts and heading off for a tour of the island by car, or even bicycle, to discover the romantic fishing villages, historic monasteries, monuments, museums and spectacular landscapes tucked away from the madding crowds. The interior is largely the preserve of a thriving agricultural community, dotted with windmills, olive and almond trees.
Majorca really is the ideal holiday destination, because it is located within a short travelling time from the home region of most holidaymakers and you can almost be sure of having hot sunny weather during most of the year.
You can therefore sit on one of the many attractive beaches and simply relax. It does of course occasionally rain, however this is normally a short heavy burst of rain which is over in hours. A shower at times can be very welcome.
There are many wonderful beaches on this green island and many of them are small beautiful coves.
There are of course some larger beaches like Playa de Palma or Playa de Alcudia.
The resort of Port d'Alcudia is situated in the north of Mallorca at the top of a long curving bay with an endless white sandy beach. It is two miles (3km) south of the historical old town of Alcudia, from which it takes its name.
The sprawling, purpose-built resort, together with its neighbour Playa de Muro, stretches for five miles (8km) either side of the coast road and is particularly popular with British, German and Scandinavian families. It has a fairly relaxed atmosphere; its spectacular beach is the major attraction, though it is also well placed for exploring the attractions around the north of the island.
Alcudia is an historic town with Roman and Moorish influences and Puerto Alcudia is a lively modern resort with one of the finest beaches in the Mediterranean.
Puerto Pollensa is situated in the north eastern corner on the island of Mallorca, very close to Alcudia and only 45 minutes from Palma. Once a small fishing port it is now an elegant holiday destination in an unspoilt corner of a popular holiday island. Puerto Pollensa nestles in a natural bay, against a backdrop of rugged mountains, giving a particularly picturesque setting. There are stretches of sandy beaches and the wonderful 'Pine Walk' right alongside the seashore where bars, shops and restaurants provide an unbeatable combination.
Puerto Pollensa and Alcudia are resorts catering for those who prefer the quieter side of life. It is nothing like the perception that many people have of Mallorca. If you are looking for sprawling crowded beaches and brash bars - you won't find them here! Although a short 10 minute drive away will take you to the Puerto Alcudia where you will find a waterpark for a family day out and more lively bars for those who prefer. If you enjoy watching the world go by, relaxing around the pool and eating good food in a relaxed atmosphere then Alcudia and villa Bonnix are just for you.
If you feel slightly more energetic you can enjoy boat trips across to Formentor bay where King Juan Carlos often moors his yacht during his frequent visits to the island. Hire a Bicycle and explore the many country lanes. Play golf, learn how to sail, scuba dive, wind surf or simply enjoy a stroll alongside the sparkling sea.
The northern area is known for its marvellous mountain walks and in Spring and Autumn the Pollensa area is an ideal base for bird watching with many migrant birds pausing en route for Africa. You may already have been to Alcudia and if so, there is no need for us to explain how beautiful it is because you already know. If you have not been to Alcudia before then you are in for a treat.
