Home description
A new, spacious and comfortable, ground floor, one bedroom apartment. The door opens on to a large, well furnished lounge, which also has a comfortable double sofa bed. To help you relax, there is a TV/DVD, with a supply of DVDs, and a bookcase with guide books, local information and reading material. The bathroom has a basin, toilet, bidet, and a bath with shower over. The bedroom has a double bed,and like the fully fitted and fully equipped kitchen, has sliding glass doors which open on to the apartment's own private yard, ideal for outdoor living.
The apartment has a great position, at the end of a quiet cul de sac, right in the centre of the small town of Alcobaca. It is barely a five minute walk from the famous, 12th Century, World Heritage Monastery, and the surrounding cafes, restaurants, and other amenities such as a small supermarket, post office, banks, and tourist information office. There is also a small convenience store just round the corner from the apartment.
So relax with a coffee in the square, or use a car, or maybe the local buses, to explore the quaint and historic towns and villages of this fascinating area. The coast and beaches at Nazare are only a 15 minute drive away (or 20 minutes by bus). Alcobaca is an excellent base, within easy reach of all the region's main attractions.

The Costa de Prata/Silver Coast region
The Silver Coast has miles of unspoiled sandy beaches fringing the Atlantic. Inland are undulating hills interspersed with woods of pine and eucalyptus and studded with pretty villages. The area is not overdeveloped and gives one a taste of the "real" Portugal. The climate is mild and sunny, and summers are generally hot. In addition, many of the country's most impressive castles, churches, convents and monasteries can be found here.
Alcobaca area
The small town of Alcobaca developed around the Monastery, founded in 1153 and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Monastery Church is huge and soaring. Its main treasures are the beautiful tombs of Dom Pedro and Ines de Castro, Portugal's own Romeo and Juliet. One of the pleasures of Alcobaca is to sit under a sun umbrella in the square, facing the monastery, watching the world go by and leisurely sipping a coffee, or eating a cake from the speciality shop. All the amenities are available round here, but if you want more, there is a Modelo hypermarket, or a Lidl on the edge of town, just a few minutes drive away. There is also a farmers' market in town on Mondays. You will see lots of examples of the local pottery industry on sale in the shops.
Alcobaca is an ideal centre from which to explore the delights of the region, either by car or by local bus. There are maps, timetables and local information in the apartment, but timetables and advice are also available from the friendly and helpful staff in the Tourist Information Office in the square. Buses leave from Alcobaca Bus Station, a short walk away, where you can obtain tickets and timetables. Timings below are by car - it takes longer by bus - but you see a lot more!
The coast and beaches of Nazare are only a 15 minute drive away - or 20 minutes by bus. Nazare evolved from a fishing village into a holiday resort, but it is still possible to see women in the traditional, multi-petticoated costume drying fish on the beach, or selling nuts. At festival times, the "Sunday" version of the traditional dress is worn by all ages. One of the great pleasures is a trip on the funicular from Nazare up to Sitio on the cliff top. The view is superb, and there is a lovely square and an impressive church. Nazare also has great seafood. A little further down the coast is the lovely crescent shaped bay and beautiful beach of Sao Martinho do Porto.
Other places well worth a visit include the abbey church at Batalha, another World Heritage site, which has some fantastic architecture. Don't miss the Founders Chapel and the Unfinished Chapels. It is only a 20- 25 minute drive from Alcobaca. Approximately a 30 minute drive from Alcobaca is the picturesque medieval walled town of Obidos. There is an annual Chocolate Festival here, early in the year.
Fatima, now one of the most important RC religious shrines and a pilgrimage site, was once a tiny village, and has been transformed since apparitions of the Virgin Mary were seen there by three village children in 1917. See the white Basilica, fronted by a vast esplanade, and the Chapel of the Apparitions. It takes about 45 minutes to drive here, and just a little further is Tomar, an attractive small town with its Convent-Fortress, built by the Knights Templars, dating from the 12th Century. This is yet another World Heritage site! Leiria, a 40 minute minute drive away, is also an attractive town, overlooked by its castle.
This region also offers Caves and Dinosaur Tracks!
And don't forget that Mafra, Sintra and Lisbon itself, to the south, are not that far away.
For the sportsman, the golf courses at Praia del Rey and Golden Eagles are both about a 40 minute drive away, with water sports on the coast.
How to get there
Alcobaca is best reached by flying into Lisbon Airport. British Airways (www.ba.com) flies from Heathrow to Lisbon several times every day. Bmibaby (www.bmibaby.com) flies to Lisbon from Manchester once or twice a week. Easyjet (www.easyjet.com) flies to Lisbon from Bristol, Liverpool, Gatwick and Luton. TAP Air Portugal (www.tap-airportugal.co.uk) flies daily from Gatwick and Heathrow to Lisbon.
Cars can be hired at the airport, or in Alcobaca, though it is much cheaper if you hire a car from Lisbon Airport on the internet. It is an hour, hour and a half's drive up the A8 to Alcobaca. Further information on getting to the A8 from the airport can be supplied. Please note that all motorways are toll roads. A map of Alcobaca showing the location of the apartment will be supplied.
There are three car rental agencies in Alcobaca . If you wish to use them please contact them in advance of your holiday.
Raide - Rent-a-car, Rua Dr. Jose Nascimento e Sousa, 13, 2460 Alcobaca. Tel. (00351) 262 58 12 51, Fax. (00351) 262 58 12 56
If you are not hiring a car at the airport, you will need to take the express coach to Alcobaca. Take a taxi from outside either the Arrivals or Departures entrances at the airport to the Bus Station - ask for Sete Rios. There are several coaches a day to Alcobaca. The journey takes 1 hr. 50 mins. and costs approx. 9 Euros one way. Timetables and more information can be supplied.

Further details indoors: Bedroom with double bed, bedside tables, large fitted wardrobe with drawers, mirror and chair. Large sliding glass doors open to private yard. Modern bathroom with toilet, bidet, basin and bath with shower over. Towels (but not beach towels) and bed linen are provided, and the apartment is cleaned before and after use. If you wish to stay longer than a week, additional cleaning services can be prearranged, at extra cost. Or you can do it yourselves! The fully fitted kitchen is fully equipped with crockery, cutlery, glassware and cooking equipment, and also opens on to the private yard. The large, attractive lounge is well furnished with a double sofa bed (linen and towels provided), another sofa, side and coffee tables, bookcase, TV/DVD, and a circular dining table with four chairs.
The apartment does not have central heating or air conditioning, but neither are really necessary. However, electric radiators are provided.
The apartment is strictly no smoking, and is not suitable for pets. Children are, of course, welcome, but perhaps the apartment is more suited to adults and their interests.
The apartment is on the ground floor, and the building is accessed from the road via a negligible step, and so is ideal for people with walking difficulties, but note that the entrance to the building is round the back, reached by a steep but very short slope. The apartment is accessible for wheelchairs, but I think the bathroom may be too small.
Further details outdoors: The apartment has its own private yard, equipped with table, chairs and sun umbrella. The yard is between two small apartment buildings by the same developer. There are also washing lines and a clothes airer. Entrance to the building is via a secure visual intercom system. All the windows have external shutters for extra security. They also keep it cool. There is street parking in the cul de sac, but the apartment has its own underground parking space, which MAY be available - please ask. There is no swimming pool.
