Home description

This rurally-located recently-completed villa is located only 10 kilometres from the beach at Nazare, a little further to Sao Martinho, and a mere ten minutes from the world heritage town of Alcobaca. There are many restaurants within easy reach - dining out need not be expensive on the Costa de Prata - featuring traditional Portuguese fare. Seafood is a speciality.

The front verandah looks out over the garden onto the surrounding countryside. At the rear, there is a large patio area, complete with furniture, substantial barbecue equipment, and an 8 metre pool. There is a substantial parking area, as well as a very large garage beneath the villa.

The Costa de Prata/Silver Coast region

This is an area of bright springs, long hot summers – often day after day of over 30+C – and warm, balmy autumns, lasting into November. A frost is a headline event, though there can be winter and spring rain, by turns refreshing and soaking!

There are rolling hills, forests of pine and eucalyptus, and long beaches, mainly golden sand, facing the splendid Atlantic rollers. It’s not over-developed, and is still distinctively Portuguese in feel, even the areas that attract large numbers of summer tourists.

There are good road connections to Lisbon – surely worth a day’s visit – and Coimbra, as well as the Serras de Aires e de Candeeiros, the magnificent inland high hill country.


Alcobaca area

The villa is only 10 kilometres from the beach at Nazare, which is sandy and safe, and lifeguarded in the summer season. Nazare itself is a lively resort most of the year, with plenty of places to eat. The long sea front is ideal for an evening stroll. Above Nazare is Sitio, which offers stunning coastal views north and south.

Other beaches slightly further away that can be less crowded, and offer the chance of walks either on the sand, amidst the dunes, or on the clifftops, all with beautiful views of the Atlantic. Sao Martinho do Porto has a safe inlet bay with a beach, as well as a boardwalk most of the way around the bay.

Obidos, a mediaeval walled city, is about 30 minutes’ drive away, and is a ‘must’ to get that authentic Portuguese feel. It hosts a large number of events throughout the year, notably a Mediaeval Fair in July and a Chocolate Festival in February. There is a lagoon close to Obidos on which you can sail and windsurf.

Alcobaca, only ten minutes’ drive away, is a World Heritage site because of its magnificent monastery. Admiring it from one of the many cafes in the square opposite its front is a pleasant way to spend an hour. There is a lively produce market on Mondays – other towns have them on other days. You’ll get good cheap fresh fruit and veg. Those at Nazare and Caldas da Rainha are good for fish, too.

Golfers can access the courses at Praia del Rey and Golden Eagles, both about forty minutes’ drive away. Walkers should explore the Serras at least once, while surfers can enjoy the rollers at Baleal, near Peniche.

This part of Portugal is also notable for its large number of live arts events. Concerts, music, drama and dance from a wide range of styles and traditions are presented at a number of venues. The Costa de Prata is also rightly famed for its porcelain and glassware.

The villa is about 110 kilometres from Lisbon Airport, no more than 90 minutes drive via the A8 motorway.
