The Algarve region
What to see The Main church of Pêra - The carved and gilded woodwork of the retables in the main chapel, the side chapels and the chapels of Nossa Senhora do Rosário (Our Lady of the Rosary) and Sagrado Coração de Jesus (the Sacred Heart) are representative of art in the Algarve a at the time (18th century). The church's holy treasures include vestments and a finely crafted silver Monstrance. The churchyard affords excellent views of the surrounding fields and the sea. Going to the west, you will find the beautiful towns of Portimao, Sagres, Silves, and in the Algarvian hills: Monchique. The western coast offers natural beauties sceneries of the Costa Vicentina going from Sagres to Aljezur. From Aljezur tourists can explore the wonderful beaches of the Algarve´s west coast: bathed by the Atlantic, they are often wild and deserted in contrast to the warmer ones of the south. Aljezur is small and tranquil, it is overlooked by a Moorish castle from the 10th century. Aljezur is divided into two parts and lies in a fertile valley with a patchwork of fields where various crops are cultivated. The administration of Pêra is located in Silves where different times and cultures overlap in this town: the castle, with its famous water cistern and walls, is of Arab origin; the Gothic Cathedral (having undergone several restoration works) was built on the site of an ancient mosque; the 12th century bridge was built where formerly stood a Roman bridge. The Cross of Portugal also deserves special mention (16th century religious sculpture), as well as the following examples of Manueline motifs: the Nossa Senhora dos Mártires Hermitage and the Misericórdia Church.

Golf: Salgados overlooks the lengthy Praia Grande ten minutes west of Albufeira, a short drive from the airport and central to the Algarve. With its open terrain and seaside location, Salgados is very much a traditional links course. The eighteen holes play across level ground for an agreeable walk, but the 6,080 metre par 72 layout is a true test of golf. It is above all a course of character and each hole presents a different challenge.
