The Algarve / Central Algarve region
The Algarve is the southernmost region of Portugal and it's one of Europe's favourite holiday destinations well known for glorious year round sunshine and excellent sandy beaches. It is renound as a golfers paradise. In fact there much more to see and do as well as soaking up the sun. From secluded coves with sandstone cliffs and azure sea to the bustling nightlife of the mojor resort there in something to suit all tastes. Inland can be found Moorish castles, verdant citrus groves and the peace and tranquility of the Monchique mountains. Situated in the central Algarve Guia is withoin easy reach of all of this. Its a sought after and interesting place to stay.
Albufeira / Guia area
If you're hoping to experience a slice of traditional village life in the Algarve, Guia will give you the perfect opportunity to enjoy a peaceful rural atmosphere quite different to the bustling vibrancy of the larger coastal resorts, like Vilamoura and Albufeira - our apartment is in a beautiful location overlooking both countryside and village with the majestic Monchique Mountains in the background. All this is within minutes of some of the most spectacular beaches of Central Algarve. Praia do Gale is within less then 10 minutes drive and streteches for several miles westwards to Armacao de Pera. Going east along the coast road towards Albufiera with its old town and famous marina you will findsome spectacular secluded coves and larger beaches. They have sandstone cliffs, unusual rock formations, fine golden sand and cystal clear sea. They are also all well signposted and easy to find. There are some pictures on the owners website (link below).
With such a fabulous selection of shops and typically Portuguese restaurants close enough to reach on foot, the only reason to venture outside the village (apart from the beaches!) is to take the children to the waterparks or Zoomarine, or to enjoy a few rounds of golf - the kind of diversity and versatility that will appeal to people of all ages and interests in a country where the sun is guaranteed to shine pretty well all year round. Such are the attractions of the village that Sir Cliff Richard has his Algarve home and famous vineyards not far from Jardim Paraiso.Out of the village travelling towards Albufeira on the N125 you will find the Algarve Shopping complex with dozens of interesting shops, a hypermarket and a multi screen cinema. In the other direction is the renound Zoomarine Park a great attraction for children and adults alike.
Claiming to have 27 restaurants (at the last count!) and various bars Guia is a great place in which to wine and dine. In the village is a well stocked supermarket, newsagents (with UK press) a butchers, bakers, bottle shop, post office, chemists, hairdressers, internet cafe and snack bars. There ia a small local market, banks with cash machines and lots more. The medical centre is within 50 yards. Although the village is truly Portuguese all are made welcome by truly friendly and helpful locals.
Guia is thought to have existed since Roman times. Its Arab name was Alfontes. However, it is really the later Christian links are the strongest. The site of the Chapel of Nossa Srª da Guia ia a place where the Virgin Mary is thought, by local custom to have appeared. This was great draw for Pilgrims and gave rise to the Guia Fair held annually from 7th to 9th October.
The 17th century village church is an interesting building with a simple carved alter, a selection of 17th and 18th century statues and some famous azulejo tile pictures. There are numerous other fine buildings, places of interest and historical sites within easy reach.
Beyond the village are tiny hamlets nestling in green countryside, vineyards and citrus groves. The coast lies to the south and inland there is an interesting hinterland with more villages and hamlets to explore. Well know centres like Lagos, Portimao, Silves (with its Moorish Castle), Albufeira, Faro and Vilamoura can all be reached easily. In the distance you can see the mountains of Monchique with its famous spa. In fact the best that the Algarve has to offer is all less than an hour away.
How to get there
There are frequent daily flights from the UK to Faro throughout the year. Low cost airlines including Easyjet, bmibaby Thomas Cook and Thompsonfly.com all operate regular services as do BA and the Portuguese airline TAP. Go to the owners website to use links that will help you find good flight and car hire deals.
Car hire is recommended but not essential. When the final rental payment has been received we will send you some detailed 'Arrival' information. This will include details of how to drive from Faro airport to Guia and then to your accommodation - an easy well signposted route which takes less than an hour. Whatever time you arrive keys are available for collection at the property from our key safe.
For those who prefer not to drive from the airport our Managing Agents offer a mini-bus / taxi service at just 39 Euros (1 way) for up to four people. The driver will be from Guia rather than Faro and will know just where to take you. Car hire can then be arranged locally if you wish.
Guia is served by a good bus service and there is a railway station less than 20 minutes away. Taxis are readily available.
