The Algarve region

Explore the Algarve

Portugal's most popular holiday destination, the Algarve is famous for its 200km of

beautiful sandy beaches. If you're looking for more than sun, sea and sand, though,

there's plenty to see and do in the Algarve. Golf lovers can tee off at over 30 local courses,

while the kids will delight in a day at Algarve's water parks (Aqualand, Slide And Splash,

Aquashow and Atlantic Park), Zoo Lagos or Zoomarine. Adrenalin junkies can hit the track

at Almancil Karting, while history buffs will love soaking in the history of Tavira, Silves and

Olhão. If all that activity has left you hungry, you're in luck – the Algarve has a huge

selection of restaurants to choose from. Be sure to try the delicious piri-piri chicken, and

finish with a glass of famous Portuguese port wine. If you choose self-catering Algarve

accommodation, you can also take advantage of the region's excellent food markets.

Stock up on fresh, seasonal produce and you'll not only save money on dining out, but get

to shop amongst the locals for a true taste of Algarve life.

The Algarve's main event

Albufeira is the place that put the Algarve on the map. The picturesque old town teems with

pavement cafes and boutiques, and the modern resort is lined by a main strip, which sparks into

action at sundown. The whole scene is framed by a 30-kilometre coastline of unspoilt beaches and

little bays.

25 beaches

Albufeira's super-sized coastline notches up no less than 25 different beaches. The old town is

home to Praia dos Pescadores, otherwise known as Fisherman's Beach, where family-friendly

bathing is supplemented by great dining options. At the bottom of the strip, meanwhile, is Praia

d'Oura, a 5-kilometre, Blue Flag-winning beach made for water sports fans. Further east is Praia

da Falesia, which is sheltered by ochre cliffs. And that's only scratching the surface.

Old town Charm

In the midday sun, light bounces off the whitewashed walls of Albufeira's old town. You can take

refuge in its churches, which date back to the 1500s, or explore the warren of cobbled alleyways

that provide a cooling antidote to the heat. Come evening, the main square bursts into life and is

the focal point for diners and casual drinkers.
