The Algarve region
The Algarve is a popular destination for tourism, primarily because of its beaches, Mediterranean climate, safety and relatively low costs. Everywhere you go, you are surrounded by bright colours, from the golden sands, to the crystal clear waters, the clear blue skies, the vivid green grass, and the white-washed walls of the buildings in the Algarve's old towns.
Along with the famous coastlines of the Algarve, there is also plenty of history and heritage to soak, up, and this can be easily found by those who venture a few miles inland into the old towns.
The Algarve also has plenty of sports on offer:
**Huge array of watersports
**Famous golf courses
Albufeira is the tourist capital of the Algarve, boasting golden beaches, luxury holiday resorts, golf courses, great restaurants and a lively nightlife. Albufeira is *the* town of the Algarve.
Once the sun sets the centre of Albufeira comes alive with bars, like the very popular Travellers Rest. There are restaurants and shops to suit most tastes from authentic Portuguese fare to Irish pubs and sports bars. Local culinary specialities are cataplana (steamed shellfish) and caldeirada (fish stew), and the simpler grilled sardines.
Albufeira is a great base to explore the region with many smaller and less well known beaches within a short drive.
