The Costa de Almeria region

The Costa Almeria offers glorious beaches and wonderful scenery but without the concrete jungle of Malaga or Benidorm.

Perfect location for: relaxation, cycling, walking, birdwatching, artists and sightseeing in real Spain. Weather in Almeria is usually very hot (winters here are like a good summer in the UK), with 320 days of sunshine a year, and Europe’s only desert is found here. As it is situated on the coast however, it is perfect for swimming in the sea. At night time however, temperatures usually drop to around 10°C, due to the cloudless skies.

On the eastern edge of Andalucia lies the province of Almeria. It takes its name from its capital city which lies on the southern coast of the province. The area could have remained somewhat unknown if it hadn't been for the film companies who discovered that the area offered ideal film sets for films such as Lawrence of Arabia, The Good, The Bad and the Ugly and Patton. Hundreds of westerns have been produced in the local hillsides.

It is home to many empty beaches and tiny hidden coves with perfectly clear water. These wonderful unexplored areas have not yet been ruined by large amounts of tourism, and are well worth experiencing. Because of the diverse landscapes, the range of sports activities is endless from water sports to hiking, paragliding, horse riding and golf.

Glorious drives in the mountains, the nearby Baza dam and lakes (great fishing), hot springs (perfect for picnics and bathing) and a restaurant (overhanging the lake!)

Almeria is home to the German-Spanish Calar Alto Astronomical Observatory is one of the most important observatories of Spain. France's Michelin operates a research centre in Cabo De Gata and in Tabernas there is a solar energy research centre, PSA.

An interesting new fact about the area: On September 29th, 2007, Pulpí, in Almería (province), Spain tossed the world's largest salad, with 6,700 kilograms (14,740 pounds) of lettuce, tomato, onion, pepper and olives, supervised by 20 cooks over 3 hours. A Guinness World Records judge was present to confirm the new record. The salad was prepared in a container 18m (59ft) long and 4.8m (15.7ft) wide.

Fabulous selection of restaurants with four course meals for less than 10 Euros including drinks. Mini Hollywood Western Town is a great day out, but above all peace and beauty.

Easily Accessible with flights from the UK and with a good road network to the surrounding areas particularly down the east coast, this is a fantastic Spanish getaway, ideal for tourists and holiday makers whilst retaining an authentic traditional Spanish environment.

Albox area

Still a very Spanish town, with narrow streets and beautiful white-washed houses, but one which now offers a wide range of facilities and where English only speakers can cope. Surrounded by olive groves and faming areas famous for its cold meats and olives, it also boasts a history dating back to its foundation in a.d. and its strategic importance during the crusades in the 11th Century.

The town itself is home to a flourishing market in town on Tuesday mornings, promoting its local finely crafted products as well as food and clothing. If you miss this market, there is still the Mercadona supermarket with wide supply of foods including fantastic fish and seafood counter plus a wide variety of shops.
Chinese and Indian restaurants are also nearby as well as the traditional Spanish food.
Fancy a drink? There is an English pub with good food just couple of miles from the villa.

Mojacar and Vera Beaches easily accessible with all the facilities you could hope for, to enjoy a relaxing afternoon sunbathing, or swimming in the Mediterranean Sea.

Mini Hollywood
Approximately 90minutes drive away, is a theme park and zoo set in the desert landscape of Tabernas. Formally a film set, many well known westerns have been shot here, including The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, 800 Bullets, and A Fistful of Dollars as well as parts of Lawrence of Arabia and Patton. Watch one of the daily shoot outs, cheer on the Sheriff and see some very rough looking locals bite the dust! There is also a small museum housing camera equipment, projectors and memorabilia. As it can be fairly hot, there is a Saloon where you can enjoy a cold drink and a snack, or take a dip in the pool. There is also a variety of “wild west” snack bars and restaurants on site. There is also a large zoo, which is well worth a visit but remember your sun block and bring a bottle of water as it is spread over a large area.

Several Golf Courses are available nearby, such as:

Desert Springs Golf Course
An 18 hole golf course, 20 minutes from Albox. Proof of handicap required.
The Indiana course is the first and only desert Golf Course in Europe and has been built to the full USGA specifications and quality standards of the now famous desert courses of Arizona and California. Generous Fairways coupled with the surrounding breathtaking landscape ensures an enjoyable experience.

Marina de la Torre Golf Course
This new and exciting 18 hole Levante Alemeriense golf course, surrounded by mediterranian seas, is located just 50 minutes away from Albox between the twosn of Garrucha and Mojacar. This carefully designed course was opened in 2000 and offers wonderful and diversive views of the Mediterranean Sea and the colourful desert-like landscape.

Valle De Este Golf Course
Just 40 minutes drive away, this 18 hole course is located just outside the town of Vera, only 7km from the beaches of Vera and Garrucha. Carefully designed by José Canales, paying careful attention to every detail and integrating the course into the surrounding landscape by making use of the indigenous vegetation giving it the spirit and character of Andalusia and the magnificent surroundings the bring to mind the American golf courses of Arizona.
The course design and setting make it quite spectacular. A characteristic of the course is that the tees are positioned on small raised platforms surrounded by volcanic rock, as well as the wide, generous fairways.

Other local attractions include:

Vera Water Park
Just 40 minutes drive away; you can enjoy a fantastic day out by the beach in Vera with your family and friends. Have fun on the great water attractions: Kamikaze, multi-slides, black holes, adventure river, tube slides, wave pool, lake pool and for the little ones, the infant pool. Also, in this facility, there is mini-golf, super jumper, mini-park, green zones, and an amusement arcade.

Viva Riva Watersports
Villaricos is well known for its crystal clear warm waters and its fabulous diving, and just 40 minutes away, you can see the various undersea wildlife up close with its multilingual school and Padi instructors.

For the more adventurous, there are tandem Paragliding flights all year round, which provide a unique look at the beautiful area from a birds eye view.

Further details indoors:
The house is ideal for two generations or two families with two kitchens two lounges and several other living areas. There is sky plus in the one lounge and basic 'freeview' in the other. Both rooms have dvd's.

There is a stero system with records and CD's and a portable CD player. There is a good selection of books , and in the twin bedded room some toys, children's books and games.

The house is very very comfortable. The kitchen provides not only everything you could possible need to cook with but also herbs, spices and basics for cooking.

Wine is available for purchase on a honour system for 1 euro a bottle,if you are too comfortable to pop out for more supplies. There are two large fridge freezers in the house and one outside so you NEVER need to run out of cold drinks. Beach towels, beach umbrella and cool box provided

Further details outdoors:
The house is set in delightful gardens, in different seasons you could enjoy a splendid wisteria for example or pick fresh figs- but almost always roses will be in flower and lavender bushes almost five feet in diameter scent the air.

The screened porch with chiminea outside offers a place to sit in comfort to dine or watch the sunset - we have spectacular sunsets. The pool area is sunny but has awnings and sitting areas with shelter for those who prefer.

Further details

We are suggesting the house as not suitable for under fives partly because the pool may need some monitoring
for safety's sake and partly because there are many individual items such as tiffany lamps, which are breakable and we would be very sad to loose.

This is not inflexible and is up for discussion if you think the villa would suit you and your family.
