The Costa de Almeria region

On the eastern edge of Andalucia lies the province of Almeria. It takes its name from its capital city which lies on the southern coast of the province. The area could have remained somewhat unknown if it hadn't been for the film companies who discovered that the area offered ideal film sets for films such as Lawrence of Arabia. Sexy Beast and Patton. Hundreds of westerns have been produced in the local hillsides.

Almeria, despite its rugged landscape and shortage of fertile soil, has managed, with a good irrigation system, to become an important growth area and it is well known for the quality of its oranges and white grapes, most of which are exported from its port. As you drive through the province you will see an endless sea of polythene tunnels, crammed with produce. The area is almost totally dependent on this industry. The province of Almeria may initially appear to be a barren desert-like landscape but on close inspection you will find it to be the Andalucian province with the longest stretch of beaches. Empty beaches and tiny hidden coves with perfectly clear water. Because of the diverse landscapes, the range of sports activities is endless from water sports to hiking, paragliding, horse riding and golf

With an average of 320 days of sunshine per year, the Costa Almeria has arguably the best climate in Spain.

Being an actual desert, there isn't much rainfall and the winters are like a good summers day in the UK. It's an ideal all year round location. During the summer, it rarely stays below 30°C (86°F). Yep, it's hot! very hot, but once you're near the sea, it's perfect. In winter, temperatures stay at around 20°C (64°F). It's very mild. At night time though, because of the normally cloudless skies, it can drop down to about 10°C.

Albox area

Albox is a municipality and is located in the Almanzora basin in the north of Almeria province, and covers some 165km² with a population of around 10,000. Surrounding villages are Arboleas, Cantoria, Oria and Taberno.

The town is about forty minutes drive from the beaches of Mojacar and Garrucha and around an hour and a quarter's drive from the airport at Almeria. Alicante airport is between two and two and a quarter hour's drive away.
Albox has good access to the A7/E15 Autovia del Mediterráneo the Mediterranean motorway that runs down the entire eastern coast of Spain.
To the north of the town are the foothills of the Sierra de Las Estancias with heights reaching 1500m (the top of the Saliente), where you will encounter the Roel mountain, the shrine of Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados la Virgen del Saliente located in an old monastery now used as a church.

Traditionally a market town, Albox is located approximately 130 kilometres from Almeria which is the capital of the province of the same name. The Albox town hall is situated in the Plaza Garcia Aro. The current mayor is Jose Garcia Navarro, a member of PSOE, the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (Partido Socialista Obrero Español). He was duly elected by popular vote in the municipal elections of May 2007.

Most visitors to Albox, come on Tuesdays as this is market day in the town. The market is divided into two halves. One half is devoted to fruit and vegetables and the other half to just about anything. There is also a smaller general market on Saturday mornings.

Guestbook for Los Morillos

Just wanted to email you to say thank you so much for the excellent service provided for our holiday in August. It was just what we wanted, quiet and private. We hired a car and drove to different places when we felt the need. The Supermarkets were easy to get to in order to stock up on the food and drink. The villa was extremely clean and airy, like home from home but with the brilliant weather and of course the swimming pool. I will definitely go to this Villa again. CL, London. August 2007 (details for confirmation can be supplied)

Good holiday, clean and refreshing. Some nice friendly bars/restaurants close by. Nice mountain drives down quiet roads, excellent scenery. Good Tuesday market and friendly locals. Great getaway and very private location. All in all - excellent!

GW - Essex August 2007 (details for confirmation can be supplied)

I have just returned from a weeks stay with my son, the villa is clean and very spacious, although a bit chilly of a night the sun is with you until about 7.30 in the evening. Some nice little friendly bars and restaurants locally, although off the beaten track iseasy to find once you've done it a few times. plenty of exploration stuff for the kids and knowing that they are safe. Will definitely be back. BP, Essex. stayed from 7th - 14th April 2008. (details for confirmation can be supplied)

The Pring Family from Manchester
We are a family of five and stayed at Villa Morrillos in august for two weeeks. We found the villa very spacious and the gardens were excellent for our children to have space to run around in. The pool was very clean there were plenty of sunbeds and outside furniture to sit out at night. We loved the patio area with bbq and dart board to entertain us in the evening. The villa itself was also spotless and the lounge area very cosy. Sky TV excellant (home from home). Also the kitchen was very well equipped, i found the washer and dishwasher a great help with having a big family. Two bathrooms is always a bonus and they were also very clean. We visited "Sinatras Bar" often as it was 2 minutes away Sunday Lunch was great value for money and really tasty. All round a great Holiday and an Excellant Villa we will certainly be re-visiting. DP Manchester (details for confirmation can be supplied)
