Little Wood
About the home
Our Trullo is named the Little Wood, and nestles in countryside between Alberobello, which is the centre of the Trullo world, and Locorotondo, another lovely little Italian town. Little Wood is ideally located for many of the tourist attractions in Puglia, such as Lecce, Martina Franca and Otranto - of course the Adriatic is just a 30 minute drive away.
The real beauty of our home is the tranquillity - set in countryside as it is, it is a million miles away from all the hustle and bustle we encounter in our working lives.
When you explore the land, you'll find the vineyard, masses of olive trees, and a mixture of additional trees - cherry, plum, passion fruit, walnut, fig and so on. If anyone in the party is particularly tired, then just use the hammock under the fir trees by the house, and listen to the breeze gently whistling through the firs!

The Puglia/Molise region

One of Italy's most beautiful & unspoilt regions, Puglia has rightly been called the 'breadbasket' of Italy and is renowned for its culture, food & hospitality. The 'Trulli' themselves are remarkable examples of limestone dwellings that have been built using the prehistoric technique, still in use in the southern region of Puglia, of drywall (mortarless) construction.
They are made of roughly worked limestone boulders collected from neighbouring fields & characteristically they feature pyramidal, domed or conical roofs built up of corbelled limestone slabs. Cool in summer & warm in winter they are the perfect holiday home for exploring the surrounding area, visiting the coast or simply relaxing by the pool!
This site has plenty of suggestions regarding all manner of things to do and see during your stay in Puglia: http://www.initaly.com/regions/apulia/apulia.htm.
The Alberobello area
Puglia is one of Italy's most beautiful and unspoilt regions, with a wealth of cultural & artistic events, historical sites and fascinating old towns to visit. Traditional agriculture and fishing still flourish in this part of Italy which is rightly famous for its cuisine, olive oil and wine as well as an abundance of organic produce.
This is an excellent little site for a quick look at Puglia - http://www.initaly.com/regions/apulia/apulia.htm.

| Airport: | Bari or Brindisi: 50 km |
| Railway: | Alberobello or Locorotondo: 5 km |
From the UK, you can get to Alberobello via Ryanair or BA. Ryanair have daily flights from Stansted to both Bari and Brindisi - both these airports are no more than a one hour drive from our property.
The car journey itself is very straightforward, from either airport - a little 30 minute stint on the motorway, and another 30 minutes to get you to the Trullo. Our eldest daughter found it OK, so directions really shouldn't be a problem for anyone!
We invariably hire a car with Hertz, since they seem to have some form of discount when you book through the Ryanair web site - if you're going to travel regularly, then make sure you join the 'number 1 club', as this can save you time when you are trying to collect car keys!

We spent two lovely weeks at Little Wood last August. The pool area was just lovely and includes a shower and nice loungers. We liked the fact that the main living area was open plan, it made the kitchen feel very spacious. The location feels very private, there is a property next door but they weren't around very much and when they were they wanted to keep plying us with figs!! The double bedrooms were nice, as were the bathrooms. The smaller room was good for the kids, our daughter enjoyed the cabin bed. Don't miss a visit to the old town part of Locorotono. We discovered it very late on having only previously driven through on one of many visits to Quinto Colori (good supermarket there and there's a games console downstairs for the kids). You get fantastic views of the surrounding area from old town and it's nice to wander around the alleyways looking at the whitewashed buildings. |

Having rented in Puglia for several years, as a family we were all in agreement that Little Wood offers something for the whole family. The pool and patio areas are stunning and spacious enough for teenagers to enjoy themselves in and for oldies to find a tranquil spot or vice-versa and the outdoor kitchen/bbq and eating area is a wonderful setting to enjoy the local cuisine. The trullo itself has been sympathetically restored to a high standard and the garden areas are absolutely beautiful and full of butterflies.Best outside seat has to be the hammock if you can reach it first ! All the local towns and places of interest are a short and easy drive away, however,we found it really difficult to leave Little Wood and spent most of our time in the pool or relaxing by it.Little Wood is an exceptional property and probably the best holiday home we have stayed in...and we were there for 3 weeks and we still did not want to leave ! |
Guestbook for Little Wood
From Matthew Rumbold and family, who rented the trullo from the beginning of August 2008, for two weeks 'Gary , just wanted to let you know what a fabulous holiday we've had, and thought we'd let you know what we'd learnt in our two amazing weeks in Puglia:
The house - what can we say? Maybe the best indication of how much we liked it is that we only made it to the beach twice the whole time we were here. The kids spent all day every day in the pool, we cooked up some fabulous local dishes, our son Monty picked figs from the trees and I have admit our 3 year old daughter Marnie stood in the vineyard for a short while feasting on a handful of grapes - getting a taste for the local vino a little early perhaps!
The weather - every single day was blue and hot - I've only ever had this consistent heat before in India.
Other than that, thanks so much for the kids toys and the wine - having rented directly from owners for the last few years, we greatly appreciate these personal touches.
All in all, we've had an superlative holiday and hopefully we'll be able to come back here as soon as we can.
From the Swamsons family, who also stayed in August:
'We have all had a wonderful, relaxing stay at the Little Wood. We found the trullo to be lovely and clean and comfy. Thanks again and good luck with your new venture - you are certainly onto a winner here!

We had a fantastic 2 weeks enjoying the delights of the surrounding area, the beaches, and the villa. the trullo is simply stunning - the effort that has gone into the renovation, and the landscaping of the gardens/gazebo/pool, is superb. it's great to go somewhere with real wow factor where it's obvious how much care and thought has gone into the work. we made full use of every part of the trullo and surrounds - breakfast on the table and chairs outside, long lunches in the gazebo, even longer bbqs at night in the gazebo, lying on the grass and snoozing under the trees when it got too hot (or hiding indoors where it was always lovely and cool). the pool was amazing and in a really beautiful setting - we had some concerns about hiring a villa with a pool when we've got 2 young kids (18 months, and 3 years), but because the pool is a little set back from the house and up the steps, it wasn't as bad as we feared (and our 3 year old absolutely loved jumping in and out all day !). most days we drove to one of the lovely lidos at the beach at torre canne for the morning, then spent the afternoons lazing by the pool (we even managed to walk round the block a couple of times !). i think we must have single-handedly funded the local supermarket during our 2 week stay such was the extent of the drinking and eating that went on (since the kids are young, we didn't go out much at night, but became very expert on the bbq (and at putting the empties out in the rubbish the next day !)). we ventured into alberobello a couple of times (to see the trullo, and visit the Thursday fruit & veg market) and it's a beautiful town thoroughly deserving of its world heritage status. all in all, a really memorable holiday (and we're very tanned but thoroughly depressed to be back in the UK!!).
Chris Newman - also 2009.
Dear Gary, we've been meaning to email you, but got home and hit the world of work! We had a fabulous time - we really appreciated the love and care you have so obviously put into renovating the trullo. I really envy you - I'd love to get a place in the area, there's something really special about Puglia for me. Best of all was sitting by the pool and watching the swifts come swooping down and taking a flying dip in the pool. We'll definitely recommend to friends.

Just like to thank you for letting my family and friends stay at Little Wood - it was amazing . The kids really made the most of the pool! The place itself is beautiful and you have designed it very well. We loved the Trullos. Jonothan was also very helpful.
