Home description

Trullo Olivia has recently been renovated and is situated in Capo di Gallo, meaning head of a rooster, on a hilltop a few kilometres from Alberobello. It is in a very peaceful location with beautiful uninterrupted views along the Itria Valley.

The trullo sits in it's own grounds of around one acre with olive, almond, cherry and fig trees. Outside is a large private stone terrace and tiled gazebo with outdoor table and chairs.

The brimming 50 sq.metre pool is kidney shaped and slopes from 1.2 metres to 3 metres in depth with a diving board, steps and outside shower. There is a barbeque area underneath an arbour with a large barbeque built into a stone wall, sink and stone preparation area. Six sun loungers are provided along with occasional tables and two hammocks.

The Puglia/Molise region

Puglia stretches from the stiletto of Italy's heel to the spur further up the back of the boot. It has a Mediterranean climate with clear blue skies and sunshine for most of the year. It is very "Italian" and there is not a great deal of English spoken. The region is mainly agricultural and the rich red earth supports over 50 million mature olive trees producing 10% of the world's olive oil. It is the largest wine producing area of Italy and so not surprisingly vineyards and olive groves are in abundance. You can find colourful and interesting markets in the towns selling fantastic fruit. vegetables. cheese, meat, fish - just about everything and at incredibly reasonable prices. Eating out is a real pleasure, again lots of choice and very reasonably priced.

There is plenty to do in the area with many interesting whitewashed hilltop towns, villages with historic centres, and Baroque churches and castles. Alberobello lies in the picturesque Itria valley and the current Michelin guide recommends a three star drive through the area visiting the towns of Locorotondo and Martina Franca. Selva di Fasano is also well worth a visit. The grotto of Castellana is stunning and home to thousands of bats
and the town of Matera with it's cave houses was the location of the Mel Gibson film, Life of Christ.

Alberobello area

Alberobello is the main town of the region. It is a town of two halves. On one side you can wander up and down the narrow cobbled streets where there are around 1400 trulli clustered together. It is quite an amazing sight and it is said that Tolkien visited the area and got the idea of his hobbit houses from seeing the trulli. Many of them are now shops and excellent restaurants, all serving delicious food at very inexpensive prices.
At the top of the streets is a trulli church with it's huge cone, well worth a step inside. Across the main street, which hosts the very colourful weekly market. is the other side of town with it's many shops, cafes, delis and another huge church.

Getting to Puglia by air is no problem with Ryanair flying directly into Bari and Brindisi from Stansted, and British Airways flying from Gatwick to Bari. Bari is a short 45 minute drive away from Alberobello, the main town of the Trulli region. Brindisi is a similar distance. Both Bari and Brindisi are small provincial airports so collecting your luggage and car is quick and easy.

Further details outdoors:
Trullo Olivia is renovated to a high standard to provide superb comfortable accommodation but without losing the unique character of the original building. The setting is idyllic with fabulous far reaching views along the Itria Valley with the ancient towns of Martina France & Locorotondo in the distance. It is perfectly peaceful with just the occasional farmer passing by on his tractor to tend his land growing olives, almonds & cherries. Olivia sits in around 1 acre of land & we too have olive, almond, cherry & fig trees. We have our own olive oil made from our olives & the figs & cherries are delicious. Guest are free to help themselves.
The brimming 50 sq.metre pool is kidney shaped & slopes from 1.2 metres to 3 metres in depth with a diving board, steps & outside shower. Large pool towels are provided. There is a large bbq built in a stone wall all underneath an arbour with a sink and stone preparation area. Six sun loungers with cushions are provided along with occasional tables and two hammocks.

Guestbook

"We had a lovely holiday at Trullo Olivia, thank you. The trullo is fabulous - you must be very proud of it. It is actually better than we anticipated and it was really nice of you to leave the books, CD's, DVD's etc. for use of the guests. We watched a different DVD every night and enjoyed rediscovering The Who's music! Thanks for making us feel so welcome and your notes on where to go etc. were invaluable.

We all had a great holiday at your wonderful trullo. You have done a fantastic job renovating it to such a high standard. The pool was much enjoyed by all of us, weather was superb and it is in a beautiful position with lovely views. The local area is enchanting.

We had a wonderful holiday and the trullo was above expectations with everything that we needed.

We had a great holiday and loved Olivia. It is in such a beautiful setting and had everything we could have possibly needed.
