The Black Sea Coast region

The Bulgarian Black Sea Riviera covers the entire eastern bound of Bulgaria stretching from the Romanian Black Sea Riviera in the north to European Turkey in the south, along 378 km of coastline. White and golden sandy beaches occupy approximately 130 km of the 378 km long coast. The region is an important centre of tourism during the summer season (May-October), drawing millions of foreign and local tourists alike and constituting one of the country's most popular tourist destinations. Prior to 1989 the Bulgarian Black Sea coast was internationally known as the Red Riviera. Since the fall of the Iron Curtain, however, its nickname has been changed to the Bulgarian Riviera.

The area's average air temperature in the summer is about 28°C, with the average water temperature at 26°C. There are more than 240 hours of sunshine in May and September and more than 300 hours in July and August. No visas are required for the citizens of European Union and EFTA member countries to enter Bulgaria.

Albena

Albena is one of the most beautiful sea resorts on the Bulgarian seaside . Albena is the place where the sea meets the sand . The resort is a delight to people of all ages. With the sand lines, and the crystal sea, Albena offers a pleasure to every taste. Albena is situated only 30 km away from Bulgaria's sea capital Varna. The resort is remarkable for its 6-km long beach. All beaches are free. You will only be charged for using deckchairs and parasols.

"Not all quite as advertised on the website, not the luxury villa we had hoped for..."

To start with I would like to say that despite the villa's inaccurate description, we enjoyed our trip to Bulgaria, the nearest decent town is Balchick, which was lovely, we also visited Kranevo to go to the beach - lovely! If you are not a fan of resort holidays - avoid Albena!

The photos of the villa on this site are old... It was amazing once, but now is a bit tired, scuffed and dirty. There is no gym anymore (we were told if we wanted to exercise, we could swim!) the place was not very clean and we had to search the place to find our mismatched bed linen. The people that met us, didn't seem to really care and said they were just agents for the owner. There are exposed wires hanging with tape round, there are missing drain covers, light bulbs missing and things held together with cable ties. The front door did not shut, we used half the cutlery draw to prop up the bottom to make the lock meet in order to lock the door.

We were supposed to have a high chair, but there was a problem, we did not get that until day 2, when we did it was dirty and dilapidated with no padding on the seat. The travel cot was provided, but was also broken, held up by two metal poles on the inside. Not ideal.

There was no hot water in the main bathroom downstairs, but the 2 ensuites and the pool room all worked. None of them very clean, shower attachments falling off the wall in one, bad drainage in another, toilet coming away from the wall and floor and a huge limescale issue!

I would not say this villa is suitable for young children, the pool is all one depth and ground level entry, so not safe for toddlers.

I would also say this villa is highly unsuitable for people with restricted mobility. To start with there are steps up to the garden, then steps into the villa and steps up to the sun terrace.

The kitchen is fairly well equipped, and in good condition, there is no dishwasher as advertised on the site.

We had random people turning up to store stuff at the villa, the maintainance guy wanted to mow the grass while we were there. Oh, and you get a dog thrown in. He is locked in the yard 24/7. He barks at anyone coming past on foot or in a vehicle. Very friendly, but a little on the thin side.

On the plus side, the views are stunning, it is quiet (apart from the dog), the pool is clean (very cold!) the area is great.

All in all, despite the problems with the villa, we had a great holiday, but we won't be going back to this place.
