The Languedoc-Roussillon region

The property is located in the wine-growing region of the Aude Valley, close to the town of Limoux, a town famous for its 'Blanquette de Limoux' this was the first sparkling wine ever to be produced in France, long before Champagne! There are many different wines produced in this area due to its Mediterranean climate and is the ideal spot for a wine tasting tour!

Swimming: There are 2 lakes nearby, the lake at Puivert (30 km) has a small beach, ideal for children. The larger Lac de Montbel (25 km) offers sailing, canoeing and pedal boats. Alet les Bains (25 km) has a natural spring fed swimming pool and childrens pool, it is open from May to September. The Mediterranean is about 1.5 hours drive away.

The climate is lovely with clear blue skies and a wonderful light that lifts the spirits!

The Tour de France passes nearby each year.

The Carcassonne Festival runs from the end of June to early August, it is a major cultural event in the South of France.

Alaigne

There are many places of interest to visit in the area:

Mirepoix, (approx 15km) is a medievel bastide town which has a large central square surrounded by half timbered houses, very interesting architecture and a beautiful cathedral. It also has a wonderful farmers market every Monday.

Carcassonne, with its magnificent medieval fortified city, is only 40mins drive away.

The surrounding area is packed with history including Rennes le Chateau,(34km) famous for being at the center of various conspiracy theories, and for being the location of an alleged buried treasure.

The Fontaine de Fontestorbes (35km) a phenomenon where the river which flows intermittently out of a cave, the flow changes every 30 to 60 minutes

The Canal du Midi is nearby also several Cathar castles

The village of Alaigne (8km) has a good boulangerie, a small grocery shop and very friendly cafe, La Galloise, a great place for a drink and home cooked food. Limoux (14km) is the nearest town, which includes shops, restaurants and banks and supermarkets.

"Peaceful, stunning retreat"

Beautiful home in a stunning, peaceful location. Feels a world away from everywhere but is yet only 15min from Limoux and smaller villages like Alaigne are 10min away. My son and husband loved the table tennis and we all felt at home having our meals in the dining area during the evening.

Many thanks, I am so glad you all enjoyed your holiday, it certainly is a very peaceful location.

"Lovely stay"

A great place to get away from it all. Great decor, stunning views and quiet location. You will need a car to get the most out of the area, but that adds to its rural charm. Hours spent on the table tennis table, adding intense sporting drama to the holiday fun!

Thank you for your review, it is a beautiful location and I am very happy you enjoyed your stay!

"WHAT A GREAT TEN DAYS IN THE COUNTRY SIDE !!!"

The rental was fantastic ! Huge rooms and baths, two great fireplaces and all the modern conveniences of home--plenty of hot water---dishwasher,fridge/freezer,clothes washer The pastoral scenes from the terraces and windows were like paintings. At night, the quietness and the great number of stars was amazing! We must have taken a thousand photos of sun rises , hayfields, vineyards, cows, sheep and goats, and, of course, the magnificent views of the foot hills of the Pyrenees. As history buffs,we never tired of seeing and exploring the castles, fortified towns and churches--dating back 800 years!!! The airport at Carcassonne,a city right out of the 12th. century, was only a short drive from Le Rouget. A "must see" is the Rennes Chateau---the" Da Vinci Code" made this town famous !

Thank you for taking the time to write a review, it is a fascinating area for people interested in history. I am delighted you enjoyed it.
