The Aegean Coast region

The Aegean Coast region

The Aegean coast has hot and dry summers, and mild temperate winters. In summer temperatures can reach into the 40's and the cooling sea breezes offers the perfect climate for those looking for sun sea and sand. This region of Turkey is also steeped in history, and includes many world heritage sites such as Ephesus where St. Paul preached and which is a huge site that is still under excavation after 110 years.

Closer to the apartment are the sites of Miletos with its huge amphitheatre, and the Temple of Apollo at Didim near Altinkum .There are the incredible white limestone cliffs and springs at Pammukale, Lake Bafa with its bird watching, and the mud baths at Dalyan.

The Akbuk / Bozbuk area

There are boat trips from the bays and beaches of Akbuk bay and over to Altinkum, where guests can jump off and enjoy the excellent snorkelling in the crystal clear water. Jeep safaris are also very popular allowing everyone to get off the beaten track and go through the forests and mountains to see landscapes not normally seen.

For retail therapy there are the shops and boutiques of Bodrum, with its millionaire yacht harbour and castle and museum.

The local village of Akbuk is 5 mins. away by car or a 30 minute stroll from the apartment. Akbuk has extensive sandy beaches, excellent restaurants, and boat trips. There is an excellent local market there every Friday where you can buy freshly caught fish, vegetables, spices and clothing. A further 20 mins. from Akbuk following the coast road leads you to Altinkum.

Altinkum and its attached sister Didim is a large resort with excellent beaches plus a wide range of shops, hotels, clubs and restaurants. All can be reached via local Dolmus (bus) or by water taxi from the Akbuk.

"Ideal getaway for sunshine, peace and quiet and unspoiled Turkish village"

I stayed in this apartment with my partner in September 2012 and we had a wonderful relaxing holiday.

The apartment is set within a new (newly rennovated?) gated complex with a gorgeous central pool. When we stayed (out of season) the complex was really quiet - there were only a few other older couples who ever joined us on occasion at the poolside. We often had the place to ourselves!

The apartment itself is beautiful; furnished to a really high standard and with a huge amount of space. All the functional things are there with a fully equipped kitchen and enormous fridge/freezer. Self-catering was easy. Our jaws dropped when we first saw the master bedroom. It is light and spacious and opens, via patio doors, onto an enormous roof terrace from which you can look down into the village bay below. The sunsets at night are spectacular - you can see the sun dip down right over the sea.

The complex is set into the mountains, a distance of about 30mins walk from the village on the coast below (a fairly gentle incline that is very easy to walk down but less pleasant back up!). There is very little else around! On the plus side this means that the quiet is intense (only broken a few times a day by the lilting call to prayer from the village mosque and a couple of birds chirruping) but on the down side for non-drivers, you do need to plan ahead in terms of stocking up on food/water. Once we'd got into the rhythm - easy walk down in the evening, have dinner at one of the sea-front restaurants, stock up at the late-opening supermarket and get a taxi back - it was really easy. I wouldn't recommend walking down after nightfall as there are some stray dogs in the area; they wander around a bit more at night which, although not dangerous, can be a bit intimidating at first. If you hired a car, I imagine things would be even easier!

The village is still pretty unspoiled. There are a couple of restaurants starting to offer "English breakfasts" but there's no hassle as you walk along looking at menus and everyone was incredibly friendly. The far end of the seafront is pretty idyllic with lush green mountains to the left and an expanse of sea ahead where you can watch local fisherman take to the piers in the evening. The local beer (Ephes) and food is good and really cheap. If you like wine, it can be expensive though. Out of season there wasn't a lot of late night entertainment (which suited us fine!).

We had a wonderful time and would thoroughly recommend it to others!
