The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Bouches-du-Rhone region
Le Tholonet and the Sainte Victoire mountain (landscapes of Cezanne) are the main attractions of the immediate area but there are literally hundreds of places of interest to visit. Aix-en-Provence, city of thermal springs and fountains, founded by the Romans and capital of Provence is only 5kms away.
Thanks to easy motorway access, the Alps, Luberon (remember Peter Mayle's "Year in Provence"?, Alpilles (another breathtakingly beautiful area of vineyards and olive groves), Camargue (the flat Rhone delta, home of wild horses, bulls and flamingos) are all a mere hour's drive away. Visit Arles and Nimes with their Roman amphitheatres, Avignon with its magnificent Papal palace and its famous bridge.
Enjoy the resorts of the French Riviera or Côte d'Azur: Hyère and the its islands, Le Lavandou, Saint Tropez.... or venture further along France's most famous coastline to Saint Raphael, Cannes, Nice.
There are plenty of beaches nearer home: Bandol and Cassis for example. Go walking or climbing in the famous calanques (creeks) or visit them by boat from Cassis or Marseille. Marseille - the oldest and second largest city in France - is unique...and just a half-hour drive from Le Tholonet.
Aix En Provence / Le Tholonet area
Aix-en-Provence hosts a world-famous lyric art festival in July. The Avignon theatre festival, also in July, is another cultural event within easy reach (80kms). There are concerts and festivals of all kinds in most of the towns and villages during the holiday season.
Wine enthusiasts will love this area. Visit the very numerous vineyards and taste the local production. Aix is a great place for dining too and there is an excellent nightlife. Don't miss the delightful markets in Aix for flowers, food, local specialities and crafts, antiques, clothes...
How to get there
The house is very easy to reach - by air to Marseille-Provence airport served by both Easyjet and Ryanair and by the high-speed train to Aix-en-Provence TGV station (direct from Paris, Lille etc). Car-hire is available at both airport and railway station. For those coming with their own car, take the A7 "autoroute du soleil" then the A8 towards Aix-en-Provence. After Aix continue towards Nice on the A8 to Exit 31 to get onto the N7 road direction Nice. Palette - the part of Le Tholonet where the house is situated is - is just 3kms along this road.
