The Languedoc-Roussillon / Gard region
Aigues Mortes is in the Gard department of Languedoc. It is a jewel of a medieval city, preserved intact and with an amazing history. The city is enclosed within square walls which provide a framework for the grid like streets enclosed within it. Aigues Mortes has some excellent restaurants, bars and boutiques. It is the essence of relaxed living and provides a chance to sample local produce.
The Camargue produces excellent beef, duck, seafood and fish, and a mouth watering variety of vegetables and fruit, all of which can be sampled in the local restaurants. The region has some excellent wines that are easily available, or you can visit the vineyards around Corbieres and Narbonnes.
The Camargue is a national park, and home to the famous white horses of the area, black bulls and flamingos. There is a stunning variety of wildlife to see. Trekking, water cruises and safaris are available to take advantage of the park and see the wildlife within it. The beaches in the area are unspoilt and stretch for kilometres with no development, and pristine forest behind the dunes. There are a number of beautiful villages and marinas to visit, and some of the finest seafood in France available from the nearby lagoons, famous for oysters and mussels.
