THE LOCATION:

This is where the Alps meet the Cote d'Azur; offering a holiday mix of mountains, rivers, canyns, gorges, beaches and coastal town and city day trips.

From La Petit Maison Blanche those with a sense of adventure can explore varied sights from rugged mountain and canyon activities of the Esteron Valley and Gorge du Verdun to the attractions of the Cote d'Azur, from Nice to Monaco and St Tropez.

Otherwise you can stock up on some of the best fresh food and drink the South of France has to offer and relax in a third of an acre of private garden surrounded by the mountains and local forest woodland, soaking up the South of France sunshine.

From La Petite Maison Blanc garden you can hear the waters of the Esteron River (pictured above and below), which snakes around the plot of land on which La Petite Maison and a handful of other neighbouring properties sit.

Turn either left or right out of the garden gate and within 5-10 minutes you'll be at paddling and bathing spots by the river, perfect for cooling down during the summer in the clear Alpine waters that run down the valley and eventually on into the Mediterranean sea.

THE ESTERON VALLEY:

The villa lies in the commune (parish) of Roquesteron-Grasse, one of a number of medieval villages scattered along the Esteron Valley in a national forest park; an area of outstanding rugged natural beauty, enveloped by stunning mountain landscape.

Discover the unique history of the Esteron: The valley is steeped in history, the Esteron river flows past the Le Petit Maison Blanche and under the nearby village bridge, the Pont de France, which takes its name as over 250 years ago the bridge linked France with Italy when the Esteron river marked the border between the two countries, up until 1760 when the Treaty of Turin handed Nice and its outlying region back to the French from the House of Savoy.

Many centuries before that, the valley was part of the Roman Empire's communication link back to Rome. Neighbouring village Pierrefeu lies 650m up in the mountains and some two thousand years ago the Romans used the village as a garrison link in a chain that stretched all the way North West to Hadrian's Wall in Britain and South East to Rome.

The Romans used coded smoke signals all along the Empire garrison chain passing messages back and forth across their European Empire.

LOCAL ACTIVITIES:

Days Out in the Alpes Maritimes: There are many days out to be had in the hinterland of the Alpes Maritimes when staying at La Petit Maison Blanche.

Whether you're a keen cyclist, artist, photographer, climber or motor enthusiast (many of the local Esteron Valley roads are often used as stages for the Monte Carlo Rally and the Monte Carlo Classic Rally), the villa's nearby D17 and D10 roads present huge rewarding opportunities all such enthusiasts with a sense of adventure and wanderlust.

Each turn of these Esteron Valley mountain roads presents something new, from canyon spots to climbing ranges, spaghetti twisting hill climbs to a myriad of photo and painting opportunities, from dawn to dusk (below).

The Esteron Valley contains some of the most spectacular canyoneering spots in the whole of Provence-Cote d'Azur. The nearby Clue d'Aiglun, a gorge with natural stone terraces with deep rock pools and waterfalls flowing the Esteron River, is a major attraction for canyoneering in the Alpes Maritimes and is just 10 minutes drive from the house.

Yet you don't have to be an adventure junkie to enjoy the local aea, some of the best days can be spent with a good book and a picnic bt the Esteron River at one of its many bathing spots, soaking up the long summer sun and enjoying a cooling dip.

Just an hour's drive further inland from the house is the spectacular Gorge du Verdon, Europe's largest canyon, dubbed the Grand Canyon of Europe. Within half an hour's drive in this direction the mountain roads of the Esteron Valley straighten out as you reach the higher plains of the Haute (High) Esteron, an area abundant with meadows and log cabins.

LITTLE CHILDREN'S ACTIVITIES:

The nearby villages of Roquesteron-Grasse and Cuebris both contain good playparks for little ones to explore. Roquesteron-Grasse's playpark also has a tennis court, table tennis table and badminton net and Roquesteron has a village boule park oppoite the local Bar Tabac.

LOCAL AMENITIES:

SHOPS:

Roquesteron is the largest of the local villages with two Bar Tabacs, a bakers, butchers, a food & grocery stre with petrol and diesel pumps, a weekly Wednesday morning fruit and veg market and a Wednesday night mobile pizzeria (Ton-Ton pizza) that cooks up some of the best pizzas in the Alpes Maritimes using a mobile stone baked pizza oven.

The village of Gilette also has a local store on your way from Nice to the house. We advise shopping at Carrefour on the N202 approx. 10km out of Nice on the way to the house for a big weekly shop.

For the best cakes and pastries we recommend a visit to the bakers near the Charles Albert Bridge near the turning on to the D17.

Please note there are no Cash point ATMs in the Esteron Valley, the nearest ones are at St Martin du Var and at Carrefour.

RESTAURANTS:

Roquesteron-Grasse has a lovely restaurant called Auberge du Vieux Moulin with table views overlooking the Esteron River and local footbridge.

Roquesteron's Hotel de la Roque serves simple but tasty daily platters and drinks, as does the Bar Tabac, which is more suited for coffee and drinks on the terrace.

The nearby inland villages of Aiglun and Le Mas also have nice restuarants, with Le Mas' restaurant run by a yound French couple who speak good English. Likewise, Cuebris has a charming little Pizzeria ran by a very hospitable villager who speaks good English.

There are many, many food and drink choices down on the coast, with Nice's old town a particular favourite for many with its quaint narrow streets and old squares a popular spot during all times of the day.
