About the home

Villa Eleni is a self catering villa about 3km outside the harbour area of Agia Galini in South Crete. Close to local un-crowded beaches, the villa has three bedrooms (two doubles and one with bunk beds), and open plan living area with vaulted ceilings and superb beautiful views across the bay of Messara. AirCon is provided as is heating for the winter. The lounge area boasts an open log fire in winter. TV is provided. The Villa has a secluded pool and garden.

South Crete is a great location for the more peaceful 'get away from the crowds' type holiday or those looking for natural scenery, historic sites or uncrowded beaches. the historical sites of Faestos, Ag triada and Gortys are very close as is the town of Spili with its roman fountains. Sailing and diving are close by in Ag Galini.

This are is renowned for dolphins and the historical story of Icarus and Daedelus. Villa Eleni is very secluded, not overlooked and has excellent facilities. A car is required.

Villa Eleni has three bedrooms, a bathroom with shower, a separate wc/shower room, open plan living area with a fully fitted kitchen with all amenities, and a superb balcony area with views over the bay of Messara. TV, aircon and heating are available. The lounge area has a vaulted ceiling.

The main bedroom opens out to the pool area and has a double bed (two singles). Bedroom two has a double bed and bedroom three bunk beds. All rooms have aircon, patio doors, double glazing and built in wardrobes.

There is solar water heating and a back-up generator in case of power cuts.

In 2012 we expect to have solar PV and Broadband as well.

Just outside Ag Galini, a beautiful small harbor on the south side of Crete, Villa Eleni is well placed to visit local historical sites of Faestos, Ag Triada, Matala, Gortys and the town of Spili. The local town has facilities to rent cars, bikes and boat trips along the coast, or to view dolphins.

There is plentiful shopping in Ag Galini which has bars, restaurants and a beach. Local beaches also include Pavlos, Ag Gorgios, Matala, Komos and Triopterra and also some not marked on any map! Tours to the Samaria Gorge and to Knossos can be booked in the town at many tourist offices.

The town also has a post office, chemists, a doctors surgery and statues to Icarus and Daedelus. For the summer of 2011 there is a sailing school set up run by an English couple, and it is planned to have a diving school also in 2011. Just south of Psiloritis, the highest mountain in Crete (which remains snow covered well into May), Villa Eleni is well placed for relaxing away from mass tourism.

The Crete region

Crete is the home of the Minoan civilization (3500 bc) and there are many historical sites to visit. The south coast, around Ag Galini boasts 340 days a year of sunshine and this makes Villa Eleni an all year round destination!

Crete is 220 miles long and about 30 miles N-S. The west is very mountainous and the Samaria Gorge is worth visiting.

There is much to do on Crete and a single visit will not be enough to see all the island!

The Agia Galini area

Agia Galini is a very attractive small harbour village with some nice beaches, nice shops, two pharmacies and a doctor! there are many nice bars and restaurants in the town, particularly on the harbour.

Close to the historical sites of Faestos, Triada, Gortys and Spili, it makes a good setting for the romantic, historian, exercise fanatic, and sailor! There is a sailing school run by an English couple, and in 2009 there will be a scuba diving centre. There are classes for art and handicraft, as well as birdwatching.

the town has car hire, bike hire and tourist facilities, including coach trips to other sites on the island. There are also boat trips to other nearby beaches, islands and also o see the dolphins in the bay.

In all, Ag Galini is an excellent all round location!

Most major charter airlines serve Crete, either Heraklion or Chania airports (equidistant from Villa Eleni), and Easyjet also serves Heraklion from both Manchester and Gatwick. Alternatively there is a very good service via Olympic Airways and Aegean Airways to both Heraklion and Chania from all over Europe.

For car hire we recommend AutoCandia or Eurocars for the best service but all major car hire companies operate locally and arrange airport pick-up.

...The three of us would like to thank you for allowing us to use your excellent villa, we had the quietest most peaceful 14 days holiday we have ever had. From the first night laid on the sunbeds watching the shooting stars and the satelittes passing across a totaly pollution free sky thro' to being awoken from a mid afternoon snooze by the eagles (or as a local told us buzzards!) screeching in the sky. This two weeks was what we all needed and was thoroughly enjoyed. But, back to reality and work so this is the first opportunity I have had to contact you.

Dear Sally,

We just got back from Crete.

We had a very relaxing time in Villa Eleni. The villa is very thoughtfully equipped and nicely furnished and most of all in a lovely landscape. I wished I had that view from my kitchen or dining table here...

You never know when you book a villa from the internet what it will be really like when you get there. But Villa Eleni is as described on your website, very comfortable and relaxing.

We went to Triopetra, Plakias and to Moni Preveli and so other places. The nicest walk was from Moni Odigitrias to the sea. In Agia Galini we like the little fish taverna "Faros" best, but we also found "Onar" a friendly place with good food.

We had an interesting experience one night when a little owl was stuck in the chimney. We freed it after we had managed to open the cover in the chimney which Mary had explained over the phone...

I don't know when I will go back to Crete the next time, but Villa Eleni is definetely on my list for good places!

So thanks very much - also for reacting so promptly and sending Mary around again.

What a lovely villa you have designed and built here on the hillside. Works so well for living upstairs and with the wide balcony; yet even better with the terrace off the main bedroom. A splendid and secluded location. We have had a most fantastic stay, but all too short. Thank you for organising everything so nicely for us. The weather has been wonderful and as a result, were able to enjoy the pool. I hope we might get the opportunity of returning. Thank you for everything once again.

Hi there!

I wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed your comfortable and beautiful home. I cannot begin to describe how much pleasure we got from the exceptional view and scenery. Whether by the poolside, or on one of the terraces or looking out the windows, the view is always breathtaking - we spent most of our time just staring!!

We explored all of the local beaches (I met Elvira, the German woman married to the shepherd, who has lounge chairs and umbrellas at the next beach over from Nikos tavern). We also went to the three beaches at agios pavlos and followed many of your suggestions for day trips and restaurants. Thank you for being so thorough.

As my husband and daughter went sailing in Mirtos the week before, we didn't end up calling the sail boat people you referred us to - it will have to be for another trip...

I also wanted you to know that Mary is a wonderful caretaker. She was available whenever needed and was just lovely!

Thank you again for all - everything went so smoothly from start to finish.

Just a quick note to say thank you for letting us share your fabulous villa last week. We had a very relaxing holiday, weather was good apart from rain on one day.

The villa is so comfortable and well equipped (and with those fantastic views) we didn't go far, just lazed about in and out of the pool with short trips for dinner in the evenings.

As we were so lazy we used your recommendations for restaurants, and then once we had been to Onars on the first evening we kept going back as it was so nice, food was good and the owner was so welcoming.

Just wanted to let you both know what a good time we had.

Visited for a short break in March/April 09. Thouroughly enjoyed the visit. The house was wonderful and the views breathtaking. The hillsides were covered in flowers - yellow daisies and buttercups and purple orchids. Weather was very mixed with two days rain, but three sunny. Arrived in the middle of a powercut (!) but the villa has a back up generator so that was fine. Glad we had central heating as the nights in March are quite cold.

Will definitely come back soon.
