Home description

Istron, Kalo Horio, just 10 minutes by bus from the bustling town of Agios Nikolaos, is a small village nestled invitingly in the Bay of Mirabello. Here, three magnificent beaches including the famous Golden Beach, along with a dozen Tavernas, half a dozen Bars, Snack Bars and Cafes (some with Internet access), Souvenir shops and Mini markets provide the ideal choice for holidaymakers.

Spend your days soaking up the sun by the pool, taking part in water sports on the beach, scuba diving or simply wandering through the olive groves and mountain paths. Following a short siesta you have a wide choice of eating places from the most simple traditional Greek Taverna to a more up-market Restaurant or why not prepare your own meal to your apartment so you can eat while relaxing and enjoying the view from your balcony .

After your meal you might like to stroll to our quiet Cafe, next to the pool area, or visit one of the lively Bars to join in one of the various Entertainment Nights including Karaoke, Quizzes, Films, Dancing and Family Games.
Alternatively you could just sit back, relax and sip a cocktail or beer, at our roof garden under the stars into the wee small hours. Children are welcome everywhere and some Bars and Tavernas offer special Play Areas and Entertainment for kids, leaving parents free to relax and unwind.

Local buses are cheap and frequent and will take you into the busier towns or to some of the tiny traditional Cretan villages where a donkey is the most popular form of transport. Taxis are good value and there is also a wide choice of sightseeing trips and excursions either by bus or boat, to places of interest on or around Crete or neighbouring islands.

With the choice of self catering accommodation on offer and local shops that sell everything from fresh bread, milk and groceries to sun creams, air beds, snorkeling gear and, of course, souvenirs, Istron is an ideal holiday destination.

The Crete region

Lato
This area owes its name to the goddess Lito (or Lato) who was the mother of Apollo and Artemis. Its ruins have been preserved in very good condition, and date back from the 4th-2nd century B.C. and are evidence of the last habitation there, a settlement that seems to have been abandoned in stages as its inhabitants moved down towards the sea.
Apart from its archaeological and historical interest, Lato is a place with a panoramic view of the whole region. Gazing over the entire area from the hills of Lato, visitors can understand why three thousand years ago the Dorian people chose to settle in this place.

Spinalonga
The most famous island on Crete, this rock stronghold and fortress is located on the north-west entrance of The Bay of Elounda. The fortress was built during Venetian times using building material from an original ancient fortress.

It was founded in 1579 by the Venetian benefactor Luca Michiel, as shown by the nscription on the lintel over the main entrance. It was part of the organization of the defense of Crete, particularly against the expansion of the Turks and the incursions of pirates.

When the Venetians were defeated and surrendered the remainder of Crete to the Turks, Spinalonga alone remained outside of their control. From 1669 until 1715, it was a refuge for Venetians, Hainidons and escapees.
Subsequently until 1903, it was inhabited almost exclusively by Muslims and when these last residents left, the place became a leper colony by order of the Greek government.
This operation was concluded in 1957, and from then on it has remained uninhabited at the mercy of time until recently, when restoration of its buildings has commenced. The public buildings, the houses and the surrounding wall which are being restored, revitalize the history of the island and celebrate the magnificent beauty of the fortress, the island itself and the entire landscape.

Aghios Nikolaos / Istron area

When the Eastern sun East daily shines on the land, the places and the people, its rays bless the hallowed ground and bestow upon it innumerable virtues. Every waking day, this blessed place of Kalo Chorio relates and reconnects its existence with the sun and the sea, the mountain, the forests and the plain, to its people and their spirited ways.
Its natural environment, its visual impact, and its physical beauty remain unchanged as many centuries ago.
The people of Kalo Chorio are bound up with nature and their land, and from Minoan times they have fought and lived with the unique conditions that the wonders of nature has bestowed upon their bountiful place.
Even today we see the same great effort, the same positive outlook, the same striving of the people for the best.
The people of Kalo Chorio are generous and hospitable, possessing a calm yet decisive soul, with a rare purpose that aspires to quietly achieve the progress of the area as well as their own, just as the quiet waves of the Mirambello seashore caress the northern end of the fertile plain of Kalo Chorio with its white foam.

The well-known archaeological history of the place starts with settlements from the Minoan era found over a large area.
Between 1910 and 1912, the American archaeologist Edith Hall uncovered the un-named small agricultural and cattle-breeding settlements on Brokrastre Hill. Next to here there is the settlement of Istrona, which has retained its name over many centuries (from the 6th century B.C. until the 18th century A.D.).
More details have been made available from the 1834 census, when Istrona had 20 Christian and 4 Muslim families.
