The Crete region

Crete is an island with an exquisite 1,000 kilometer-long coastline dotted with numerous coves, bays and peninsulas, which afford a multitude of soft, sandy beaches along the beautifully blue Mediterranean Sea. After all, it's among the finest in the world and has established Crete as one of Europe's most popular holiday destinations. And, of course, the island's historic importance in today's world as the home of the Minoan civilization with important archeological finds at Knossos, Phaistos and Gortys, is evidenced by the tens of thousands of visitors to these sites each year.

However, Crete is the largest island in Greece - the fifth largest in the Mediterranean - and, within its diverse area of more than 8,000 square kilometers, there are many other jewels just waiting to be discovered by the more adventurous explorers of holiday treasures.

If you haven't visited Crete yet, this summer may be the time to come and discover this fascinating Greek island. If it captures your heart, don't worry. Come back next year and Crete will welcome you once more with its smiling Cretan sun, the sounds of the Cretan lyre, the scents of orange blossom and jasmine, a slice of cool red watermelon and a glass of iced raki.

Aghios Nikolaos

Agios Nikolaos, or just Agios as the locals call it, dominates the beautiful Merabello Bay, on the northeast coast of Lassithi Prefecture in East Crete the town has a population of 10,000 and though small, it is the second largest town in Lassithi Prefecture, the easternmost prefecture of Crete.

Agios Nikolaos was one of the first towns in Crete to feel the effects of tourist development, and the famous lake of Agios Nikolaos, around which the town centre is built, continues to impress visitors.

Well known about it's great view Agios Nikolaos is set on the largest natural bay in Crete, Mirabello or Merabello Bay, named for the beautiful view (mira bella) of the sea from the town.

The history of Agios Nikolaos is marked by its harbour in the Ammoudi area, which is still the commercial port of the town.

This site was chosen for a major harbour in East Crete, because the islets of Agioi Pantes before it offered better defences against possible attackers and good shelter from the northwesterlies, which can blow quite strongly.

In the Venetian period, the harbour of Agios Nikolaos had a capacity of 25 galleys, a fairly significant number for the time, and served the needs of East Crete.

The two islets of Agioi Pantes (All Saints), the natural breakwaters of the harbour, now shelter a few Cretan Wild Goats (agrimia), a species at risk of extinction.

Aghios Nikolaos is the heartbeat of the tourism in Crete.

There are fantastic blue flag beaches with watersports if you want a change from relaxing... And a marina with sailing regattas.

There is plenty of night life to enjoy, festivals and a lot of activities all year round .

This town is ideal for everyone, young and old, singles, couples and families, explorers and those who would rather spend their holidays on the beaches of Agios Nikolaos and other places nearby, such as Elounda to the north or Ammoudara and Istron to the south.

Tourist development almost disappears away from the coast, with the exception of Kritsa, a village whose traditional atmosphere draws large numbers of visitors, this means that there are many opportunities for people who come to Agios Nikolaos on holiday wanting to explore non-touristy areas of East Crete, either by rented car or on organised day trips.

"Beautifully appointed, clean & comfortable and an easy walk into town for restaurants, bars etc."

This is a beautiful apartment with great space and layout, well equipped and furnished and very comfortable. It is well situated, just a few minutes' walk from the actual town with restaurants, … More

Thank you very much for your review and we are very happy that you had such a good time at Ammoudi Appartment! Also we are very sorry that you had some problems. According to the Greek laws the only period allowed to do constructions is the out of season period and its very sad that you came when the constructions on the road started which as I suppose caused the noise, because usually its very quiet, also that was the reason of the slow Internet connection because during the construction they cut the Internet cables and they had to replace them. Although we ensure you that your next time will be without these problems as now everything is back to normal again! Greetings and Season wishes, Ammoudi Apartment!
