The Crete region

Crete is an island with an exquisite 1,000 kilometer-long coastline dotted with numerous coves, bays and peninsulas, which afford a multitude of soft, sandy beaches along the beautifully blue Mediterranean Sea. After all, it's among the finest in the world and has established Crete as one of Europe's most popular holiday destinations. And, of course, the island's historic importance in today's world as the home of the Minoan civilization with important archeological finds at Knossos, Phaistos and Gortys, is evidenced by the tens of thousands of visitors to these sites each year.

However, Crete is the largest island in Greece - the fifth largest in the Mediterranean - and, within its diverse area of more than 8,000 square kilometers, there are many other jewels just waiting to be discovered by the more adventurous explorers of holiday treasures.

If you haven’t visited Crete yet, this summer may be the time to come and discover this fascinating Greek island. If it captures your heart, don’t worry. Come back next year and Crete will welcome you once more with its smiling Cretan sun, the sounds of the Cretan lyre, the scents of orange blossom and jasmine, a slice of cool red watermelon and a glass of iced raki.

Aghios Nikolaos

Village with many olive groves. On the road towards Avgo settlement, ruins of Minoan settlements and copper mines have been found, while 2km from the village, stands a huge Monumental Olive Tree, from which a kòtinos (olive wreath as a prize) was cut off in order to crown the first female Marathon winner of the Olympic Games “ATHENS 2004”.

Apart from swimming, you may also go on excursions to the area around. The village of Kavoussi (3,5 kilometers far from the beach at the South), built at the foot of mountain Thrypti, within a small fertile valley with vegetable cultivation, vineyards and olive trees, is certainly worth seeing. Once in the village, you may visit the Byzantine churches of Aghios Georgios (St. George) and of the 12 Apostles. It is also worth seeing the huge perennial olive tree, with a trunk of an impressive diameter, within the valley at a distance of some 2 kilometers southeastern to the village ; it is certainly a natural monument, worth taking photos of it. If you are fan of archaeology, don’t miss to visit the Minoan settlements at the sites of “Vrontas” and “Kastro”; also you should go any way to see the Minoan copper mines at “Chryssokamino”. Also at the beach of Tholos you may see ruins of the Roman period, whereas an Early Minoan settlement is found on the small islet of Psira, opposite to the beach. The fans of natural sightseeing should visit the Messona gorge and the cave Theriospilio, with interesting stalagmites, close to “Chryssokamino”.

Sights :

· The archaeological site of "Vrondas", a preminoan settlement which can be visited by car.

· The archaeological site of "Plai Kastrou", preminoan settlement with interesting finds, now on display at the Iraklion museum, visited only by a 1.5km footpath.

· The gorge of Mison with rare flora and fauna, and two paths, one for walking and one for trekking.

· The cave "Theriospilios" with stalactites and stalagmites.

"This is a great villa!"

The Villa is spotless, comfortable and has a magnificent view and a great pool. Kostas and his wife are so nice and they take very good care of the Villa and its surroundings. At arrival the fridge was packed with everythinkg you need when you just arrive. So nice! We loved to stay at the terrace to watch the sun go down. The beach down the road is very nice, but our favorite beach was Voulisma, 13 km west from the Villa. You really need a car here. Not only for doing the groceries, but also to visit all the beautiful places of Crete.
