The Crete region
Crete is the most southerly island in Greece with sunny, dry weather for most of the year. The region of Lassithi is towards the North East of the island of Crete and the town of Aghios Nikolaos is situated on the coast of the Bay of Mirabello. It is set on a headland and has a port on one side of the town and a marina on the other. The beautiful inland lake makes the town unique. The terrain in the area is very rugged in parts and very beautiful with views of the mountains and the sea never far away. Elounda is just a short car or bus ride away from Aghios Nikolaos and boasts many world class hotels where celebrities often stay. The Island of Spinalonga made famous by the book 'The Island' can be seen off the Elounda coast. The weather in the area is mostly bright and sunny with little, if no rain between May and October. Even in the winter months it is mainly mild and usually sunny. Further afield you can visit Knossos where the Greek Gods ruled, the cave said to be the birth place of Zeus on the Lassithi Plateau plus many other historical sites which are nearby.
The Aghios Nikolaos area
Easter is a great time to visit Crete but Aghios Nikolaos is even more special with the burning of Judas at midnight on the inland lake to mark the end of Lent and the beginning of the Easter celebrations.
The summer is great for exploring the many ruins and historic places of interest, lazing on the beach or participating in water sports. Dining outside on the edge of the sea in the cooler evenings is a great way to spend time.
The Spring and Autunm offer more mellow days; great for walking, dining outside or just lazing.
There are many good restaurants in town offering a wide variety of food from fast food with home deliveries to fine dining; either al fresco or inside. The local restaurants are all a short walk from the house taking between 2 and 15 minutes depending on location. There are many bars too, especially around the port & marina, at the waters edge.
If you want to travel further afield, Elounda is great for all types of restaurants and if it is small, traditional tavernas you seek, try the villages of Limnes and Choumeriakos approx 9 km away. The food and local wines are fantasic and offer great value for money.

I stayed in this newley refurbished typical Creten townhouse for a week in April. The owner has done a brilliant job of the renovations, keeping the outside very traditional looking, but the... more |

Lovely clean appartment with a good size roof terrace and a shady terrace area on the 1st floor, which is great for outside dining. It's in a great loaction just 2 minutes stroll to the town centre. With restaurants, shops and bars near by you are always close to activity but the house is in a quiet location so you are not troubled by noise. The nearest beach is about a 5 minute walk and there is a larger beach 10-15 minutes walk. |

You couldn't ask for a better house in a better location for your holiday. Its clean, beautifully decorated and the furniture all new, modern and comfortable. We felt at home from the minute we walked in. The owner has gone the extra mile in making sure that there are lots of things to make your stay even more comfortable, and it really adds to your holiday experience. Elise House is right in the centre of town, but you'd never know it as the street is so quiet and you feel really safe. I stayed for a week with my two nieces (in their early twenties) and we all had a fab time ... lots of late nights and lots of laughing (as well as great food and a drop or two of alcohol!). You've got shops, bars, restaurants, beaches and fabulous views right on your doorstep. Buses and taxis are all close by, so you don't need a car and there's so much to do that you won't be bored. I'll be staying at Elise House again next year. We all loved it. |
