The Crete region
Crete is the largest and most southernof the Greek islands with a colourful history going back 8000 years. There are many archaeological sites, museums and places of interest to visit, right across the island.
For those who like walking, the choice of gorges, plateaux, hills, mountains and caves is vast, and there are wonderful opportunites to explore the countryside with its varied landscape.
The ever changing light is of special interest to painters and artists and botanists delight in the local flora. Birdwatchers too can spot rare eagles and vultures.
The sea is generally clean and if one wishes, there are plenty of places where watersports are on offer.
There are good roads joining the four main districts of Crete together and easy access to the two main airports in Heraklion, the capital of Crete and also to Chania in the far west.
The cities and towns offer a good selection of shops, supermarkets, bakeries, butchers, fish shops, tavernas, cafes, music bars and discos. There are also hospitals, medicare centres, private doctors and dentists.
Aghios Nikolaos is an attractive city with a Harbour, Marina, Lake, a selection of beaches and a central square. There is a bus station with a regular bus services to the the main towns and cities of Crete. There are two cinemas, one of which is open air in the summer.
During the summer months there is an extensive programme of events including theatre, Greek dancing, folk music, concerts, gastronomic events, art and photograph shows and there is an excellent archaeological museum and folk museum.
There are three major Minoan palaces including the famous Knosses, plus innumerable smaller Minioan and Dorian sites. Close by is the attractive harbour village of Elounda and nearby Spingalonga Island, to which there are several boat trips during the season. Kritsa, a village dating back to Byzantine times has a church with well preserved frescos, an archaeological site and many shops, tavernas and cafes. Lassithi Plateau is a beautiful drive from Panorama Villas and a most interesting place to visit.
All around are traditional villages and small coastal resorts, such as Mochlos, which is well known for its fish tavernas. There is also a renovated fisherman's cottage available for rent here (see Villa Artemis on the website link).
Local walking trips can be arranged in order to enhance your holiday and stay at Panorama Villas.
The winter period is quieter, but the roads are empty and the big archeological sites and museums are open and not crowded. During the Spring, the wild flowers are in abundance and the mild weather encourages long country walks or lazy times by the sea.
