The Crete region
Crete is the largest of the Greek islands and furthest south, not that far from the north coast of Africa - hence it's hot climate!
It's history is fascinating - beginning with the the oldest civilisation in Europe - the Minoans - to its occupation by the Romans, the Venetians, the Turks, and finally by the Germans in WW2. Crete did not become part of Greece until 1913! So it is left with a huge variety of architecture and ancient monuments dating back 3500 years, including the world-famous Knossos Palace in Heraklion.
But if you've just come for the sunshine, there are plenty of modern ways of having fun!
Elounda is a small town which grew from a fishing port (which it is still today) to a tourist resort because of its outstanding scenery. It still retains its small-town charm but has plenty of attractions with its Blue Flag beaches and tavernas, cafes and bars. Nearby is the famous island of Spinalonga, which was a major island-fort in Venetian and Turkish times, but subsequently became a leper colony up until 1953.
Just 9 kilometres away is the major resort of Aghios Nikolaos, with its port, marina, shops and all the facilities you would expect from a modern tourist centre.
Also Tony has a good knowledge of the history of Crete and may be available to take guests on private tours to some interesting places within a day's drive of Elounda.
