Spitaki
About the home
This lovely old house is renovated to a high standard rarely found in Greek self-catered properties. Handmade terracotta or marble floors inside and hammered marble underfoot outside. This place is perfect for a couple who enjoy having a good amount of space in their accommodation.
The master Bedroom is huge and covers almost the whole of the first floor area with good-sized ensuite bathroom; it faces east towards the mountains and west, towards the sea.
The small garden is accessed directly from the Main Bedroom and Kitchen/Dining Room and faces west. A large sun umbrella shades the outside table and there are both sunny and shady spots in the garden for lazy afternoons. Airconditioning is now included for the summer (or use the overhead fan) and full central heating for the winter months. On the ground floor a good sized twin-bedded room with separate shower room.
In winter the divans in this room provide extra seating.
Steps both from the street and at the rear of the property may make it unsuitable for the infirm or elderly.
This area is not for those looking for nightlife. Walking, Reading, Swimming, Painting and Eating are the main activities for you here. There are several Restaurants (in winter, fewer but still at least two), coffee houses and a few shops. You do not need to cook at all from Breakfast to Dinner - it is all here. The main Medical Centre for the area is also on the outskirts of the village.

The Peloponnese region

This part of the Peloponnes is a hidden gem. The huge Taigetos mountains behind and clear, turquoise seas below. The sea is extremely clean and clear and swimming is safe and Pantazi Beach is a 10 minute flat walk (or cycle ride). This is a wonderful place for relaxing, painting, reading, walking, on waymarked paths alone or with a leader, and bird watching. Winters are mild with plenty of bright sunny days but chilly nights. Summer is much longer than the tourist companies would suggest with beautiful, clear days right through December and January. Wild flowers cover the landscape from late September onwards and right through until mid-May.
Swimming in the village it is via a ladder into deep water at the old harbour and from the rocks. Pantazi Beach Pantazi is shaded by Tamarisk trees and in summer offers sun loungers/umbrellas/changing facilities/taverna/beach bar/WC.
The busy little resort of Stoupa is just a 25 minute walk away. Here you may hire a boat, pedalloe or try one of the tens of tavernas and then return to sleepy Aghios Nikolaos where the delightful tavernas with home-cooked food, overlook the pretty harbour.
The Aghios Nicolaos area
Day trips can easily be arranged to many historical sites - Olympia, Ancient Messene, Mystras & Monemvasia to name but three. In Kardamili (mentioned in Homer's The Iliad) there are numerous tavernas and good tourist shops as well as the site of Ancient Kardimili with a fascinating little museum.
This a very popular area for walking. There are good waymarked paths all over the Taigetos mountains if you are confident to walk without a guide. There is also a small company in nearby Kardamili who can arrange walks, or trips to many the ancient sites in the area.
There is bicycle hire in Aghios and the immediate area is flat and safe. They organise a daylong picnic cycle ride during the main season.
A Yoga centre just a few miles away in the hills runs open sessions twice a week.
If you need to keep in touch there is an Internet cafe and nearby coffee houses with free internet access.

| Airport: | Kalamata: 40 km |
Direct flights to Kalamata (KLX) flights run from May through October from Gatwick and Manchester. Flight days are Sundays from London. The Taxi charge from Kalamata to the house is 60 Euros. If you want to take time off in Athens, it can be cheaper to take a flight into Athens and either hire a car or we can contact a good and reliable taxi driver who will take you to the door. The beautiful drive from Athens to Aghios Nikolaos takes approximately 3.5 hours. We would recommend that you do spend a night (at least) in Athens to see the sights, at one end of your break. We can suggest good, reasonably priced, central but quiet hotels that where they can also help you to arrange trips. Car hire companies will deliver/collect from any Athens hotel. Hertz, Avis and Europcar are all there. On a general map you may find Aghios Nicolaos, which is 7km south of Kardamili.
