The Languedoc-Roussillon / Herault region

Ten years ago we discovered this historic working village, with its Roman bridge and 14th century gothic church (originally a much older Benedictine monastery), attractively set in vineyards in the Midi, just fifteen minutes from the blue Mediterranean. Now, this tranquil maison de village in St Thibéry provides the perfect base to explore the South of France the tourists have forgotten - the Languedoc - or simply to relax in the sun. A short drive from a nine-mile golden mediterranean beach, this typical french village house has been carefully converted a self-catering apartment, combining all the advantages of private accommodation with the pleasures of sun-drenched local beaches, sleepy towns, superb wines and gourmet seafood.
The Agde / St Thibery area
St Thibéry is a friendly working village, situated among the vines, just a 15 minute drive from a nine-mile long golden Mediterranean beach. Originally called Cessero (the name of the local wine) by the Romans, it was later renamed in honour of Saint Thibéry by Benedictine monks in the 9th century. A Roman festival is held every August, with Gladiators, Son et Lumière, and a banquet in the market square. The village has two bakeries, a small supermarché, a bar and restaurant within a short walk, but a car is really necessary to take full advantage of all there is to see and do throughout this fascinating region.
Closer to the village, call at a boulangerie or farmers market in the morning to buy a picnic lunch, take a boat or bike along the Canal du Midi, enjoy a game of boules later in the village, later still dine at home, or nearby, or in a neighbouring village, or a short drive away at the Michelin star restaurant in Marseillan, or perhaps at an accordion restaurant on the canal. Here you can relax and enjoy the leisurely pace of village life to the full, as well as exploring and discovering the many surprises of the Languedoc
