The Languedoc-Roussillon region
The apartment is situated on the ground floor of a secure private residence just 100m walk from long sandy beaches and overlooking the river as it joins the sea.
In the nearby towns of Grau d'Agde and Agde you will find an excellent selection of shops, restaurants, cafes and bars. There is a daily market in Grau d'Agde on the opposite side of the river which you can reach by the little ferry boat which goes back and forth every day in the summer until midnight.
Just a minute's walk away are a number of bars, restaurants and shops for your everyday needs including a bakers and supermarket.
The apartment is an ideal base for exploring the Languedoc-Rousillon region including the Parc National du Haut Languedoc for beautiful mountain gorges and hiking, the Corbières wine region with its Cathar castles or the many fine beaches in the area.
La Tamarissière is very much an under-developed seaside resort and even in high season during July and August, is mainly populated by French.
The 5 café/bistros which are just a few minutes walk away are moderately priced with moules & crites for 9.50 euros, steak and chips for 14 euros or various salads for around 7-9 euros.
There is a fine dining restaurant called the K'Lamar about 200 metres from the apartment which serves outstandingly good food and it's tempting to go there as often as the wallet allows ! If you factor-in not needing a taxi then it makes it quite fair value.....their menus range from around 20 to 35 euros.
There is another upmarket restaurant over on the other riverbank called Adagio's plus quite a number of other lively mid-market bistros so you get a pretty good choice. Make sure you book ahead for Adagios or The K'Lmar during the busy July/August season and make sure you are at your table by 8pm latest for faster service and tables with the best view.
During August the small river ferries operate up until midnight and they are just 80 yards walk away from the apartment so very convenient.
The ferries can be used to get you across the river to the small daily market in Grau d'Agde.
There are superb sandy beaches just a minute's walk away.
Sea-angling, river fishing, sailing.
Further afield are :
Béziers (30 minutes), historic town and capital of wine producing and rugby. Especially vibrant in August and during it's famous Féria. Perhaps the best flower market in the whole of the south on Fridays in the beautiful tree-lined main boulevard.
Canal du Midi which links the Atlantic with the Mediterranean, miles of flat walks along the shady tow-paths. A choice of boat excursions can be taken.
Carcassonne castle is well worth a visit, especially on jousting days!
Golf courses nearby at Béziers and Cap d'Agde
Bassin de Thau - a calm inland sea teeming with fish. A breeding place for oysters and shellfish, producing over half the oysters consumed in France. Villages, such as Bouzigues and Meze, have many restaurants serving sumptuous platters of fresh shellfish.
Haut-Languedoc Regional Nature Park - gorges, Lac de Salagou.
Pézenas - City of Molière with an exceptional architectural heritage. Numerous arts and crafts artists with workshops open to the public. Large market every Saturday morning.
Spain - an hour's drive to the border.
Barcelona - approximately 3 hours' drive.
