Holiday House in Vulcano
Apartment | 1 bedrooms | sleeps 4
A small corner of Earthly Paradise: Our house is located in the very exclusive residential village of Lentia: one can rest in its light-blue porch, enjoying a breathtaking landscape, the shade of pine trees, eucalyptus trees and fig trees and the sight of sailing ships passing by the main bays of Eolie archipelago. From the path next to the porch one can enjoy the view of marvelous flaming sunsets on the Alicudi and Filicudi islands, the most far islands of this archipelago. When opening the window shutters in the morning, our guests should not be surprised to see, in such a magic and picturesque environment, a family of wild rabbits (undisturbed guests of the Vulcano Nature Reservation) who quickly hide in the ferns.
At night the double room offers an extraordinary view on the erupting Stromboli volcano!
The big dining room of our two-room house has a cooker with 4-burners and a well equipped kitchen wall, a big freezer/fridge, and complete kitchenware. In the same room there is a big and comfortable double divan bed. In the access area to the dining room there is an useful wardrobe available for 3th or 4th guests.
Eolie archipelago (Sicily):
here you find seven islands resembling ink drops on a bright blue sea with changing shades. Here human beings and nature still live in a perfect environmental balance in a enchanting surrounding belonging to the UNESCO World Heritage.
There is neither winter nor scorching summer in the isle of VULCANO: average temperatures range from 14° C in January to 27°C in July. During the day, beside the beautiful sea, one can enjoy this island's special gifts to its guests: thermal water springs, warm mud baths with undoubted therapeutic effects, natural hydro massages of warm water streams (which reemerge in the sea a few meters from the shoreline), easy walking tours to enjoy the view of sulphurous vapors and bright yellow sulphur crystals on the crater of the Vulcano. In this island houses still feature a typical Eolian architectural style and colors. From the crater rim one can enjoy a complete view encompassing all the active volcano located on European islands: Vulcano, Lipari, Stromboli and Etna (the highest one: 3300 m over sea level) for a marvelous sight which can take your breath away and touch all your heartstrings.
“Nothing more stunning can shock the human eye” (Guy de Maupassant)
In this unblemished oasis surrounded by open sea, an easy walk will lead you on top of the crater of the Vulcano where you can see unique ores and land configurations (the so-called “bread bombs”) in the Bomb Valley moonscape. Amidst the fumaroles, one can sweep the boundless horizon...
THE HOT SPRINGS OF VULCANO :
Even the ancient Romans would bathe in this large natural pool of steaming water, on area that is dotted with fumaroles and is just a stone's throw from the black beach.
Enjoying the thrill of bathing in a big pool of thermal, sulphurous and steaming water: this is one of the many attractions on the island of Vulcano in Aeolian archipelago. Interesting natural phenomena can be seen at the nearby beach where lively gaseous emissions share space with the water and the black sand. The fumaroles at the of the volcanic crater (391 metres above sea level) can only be marvelled at by taking the 45-minute walk up to the upper edge of the volcanic cone.
While enjoying the sea, it is also possible to make some easy and interesting daily tours by hydrofoil to the other islands of the Eolie archipelago. These islands all have different environmental and landscape characteristics but all of them always enjoy a clear cloudless sky and a mild climate. The Lipari isle has pumice and obsidian quarries and pumice strands where the Taviani brothers filmmakers shot their famous film “Kaos”. The romantic landscapes of the Salina isle hosted the set of the film “The postman” starring the Italian actor Massimo Troisi and the French actor Phillippe Noiret. The Stromboli isle, featuring rough landscapes, is an active volcano with a lava flow constantly running towards the sea: here night skies are always glowing for explosions. The Alicudi isle has no real streets: small paths can be visited on a mule, which is the only means of transportation of this place…
These days the Aeolian Islands are like seven wonderful, wild “sisters”, which echo the tales of Homer in their beauty, when Vulcano, the god of fire, and Eolo, god of winds, chose them as a refuge after the flight from Olympus.

The Sicily region
"To have seen Italy without having seen Sicily is not to have seen Italy at all, for Sicily is the clue to everything."
The Aeolian Islands / Vulcano Island area
The Aeolian archipelago, with its 7 islands, is the emerging part of a huge submarine volcanic arc which extends for around 200 km. The Aeolian Islands are the result of a submarine volcanic activity. They emerged from the sea 2 million years ago. Geologists found some rocks dating back to 1 million 300 thousand years ago and lavas dating back to 500 thousand years ago. Panarea, Lipari, Filicudi and Alicudi are the most ancient volcanoes. In Panarea and Lipari there are still fumaroles and thermal springs, while in Alicudi, Filicudi and Salina the volcanic activity has completely disappeared. Vulcano and Stromboli are the only active volcanoes. The island was defined in ancient times as the “Lighthouse of the Tyrrhenian Sea”. Its glares flashing every 20 minutes can be seen even from a great distance. The Mediterranean vegetation characterizes all islands: oleanders, myrtles, rockroses, heaths together with rosemary, thymes, heliotropes and mastic trees are the most common plants. Two woody plants can also be found in almost all Aeolian islands: grape-vines and olive trees. The landscape is characterized by cultures of olive trees and grape-vines, bushes and pioneer vegetation. The most important products that are exported from these islands are capers and “malvasia”, a dessert wine produced mainly in the island of Salina using local grapes. The rich and varied fauna includes vertebrate animals like birds and lizards and invertebrate species like coleopterans and gastropod seashells. The sea is full of life: anchovies, sardines, mackerels, mollusks and crustaceans are the most common ones. Even though they are being abandoned, tuna and swordfish fishing are traditional activities carried out at the end of spring in the islands of Lipari and Stromboli. The weather in the Aeolian Archipelago is very arid, due to the scarce rain. The temperature is mild during winter and not too high during summer, thanks to the marine breeze. The average temperatures are 13° C. during winter (January), 20° C. during spring (May), 27° C. during summer (July) and 21° C. in autumn (October). The yearly average temperature fluctuates between 20° and 16° C. The predominant winds are the Mistral (north-west wind) and the Scirocco (south-east wind). ABOUT VULCANO: Even though the last eruption occurred in 1890, the volcano never stopped proving vital and some phenomena are still visible: fumaroles, steam output both on top of the crater and beneath the sea and the appreciated therapeutic sulphur mud. The isthmus that connects the Isle of Vulcano to the smaller isle of Vulcanello creates the two bays of “Porto Levante” (East port) and “Porto Ponente” (West port). Porto Levante is the main destination of tourists due to the hot waters generated by submarine hydrothermal activity. Porto Ponente is also very much appreciated by visitors because of its very fine black sand and the beach resorts very close to the sea. The mud pool in the area of Porto Levante is one of the main characteristics of the isle and attracts every year thousands of visitors thanks to its therapeutic properties. On the other side of the island there is the solitary Gelso beach (Mulberry beach) that can be reached both by land and by sea. This beautiful beach is also famous for its typical small restaurants. A typical attraction of the island is the climb to get on top of the crater: it lasts one hour and, once on the top, you can enjoy one of the most spectacular views of all the 7 Aeolian Islands. The most important urban areas of the island are “Vulcano porto” and “Vulcano Piano” which is located at a distance of 7 kms from the port. Vulcano piano lays on a hill and tourists can find here a surprisingly flowery landscape. To better enjoy the natural beauty of the island of Vulcano, we suggest you to rent a car or a scooter.
