The South Australia region
Welcome to the Adelaide Hills where vineyards intersect with rambling forests and steep ridges yield to rolling hills. Artists and artisans flourish here. Fine galleries abound. Winemakers too, take inspiration from the landscape, producing cool climate wines with soul and a sense of place. Some 50 cellar doors are spread across the Adelaide Hills.
Cheese and chocolate, beer and cider and even bread and jam are made the old fashioned way - with hands and heart. You can satisfy your appetite in a country pub, take a gourmet approach in a sophisticated restaurant or picnic with local produce fresh from the farm gate.
Time your visit right and you could enjoy a country show, a farmers market, an art exhibition or a celebration of the region's food and wine.
Crafers is regarded as the gateway to the Adelaide Hills and is one of the oldest towns in the region. Adelaide's highest peak, Mount Lofty Summit at 710 metres is a 5 minute drive from Crafers and there is an excellent visitor centre and restaurant at the peak. Other attractions include the Mount Lofty Botanic Gardens, Cleland Wildlife Park, where visitors can hold Koalas and learn about Australian native wildlife; Mount Lofty House is a boutique hotel with spectacular views.
