The North West Italy region
Piedmont is a geographically diverse region, relatively undiscovered and famous for producing some of the world's finest food and wines. It boasts some of Europe's most stunning landscapes with a multitude of vineyards and rolling hills, interspersed by forests, meandering rivers and fast flowing streams. The property itself is set in a tranquil location, the Bormida River to the side and rear attracting an abundance of wildlife including deer, otters, owls, heron and kingfishers.
Less than an hours drive takes you to the Italian Riviera where one can choose from a selection of chic, cosmopolitan resorts to secluded coves along the Mediterranean coastline.
The region's mountains to the West of Turin provide spectacular settings for many internationally renown ski resorts within two hours drive. For the more casual skier there are several nursery and snowboarding slopes within an hours drive of the property.
Turin is the regional capital and possesses many fine shops and museums of historical interest, which are well worth a visit. Serravalle Designer Outlet near Milan is Europe's largest designer outlet with 180 stores and showcases many Italian brands such as Bulgari, Prada, Dolce & Gabbana and Versace, as well as other major international brands.
For a more relaxing day out, there are several Regional Parks and Nature Reserves within easy reach where you can see the local flora and fauna of this beautiful unspoilt landscape. A two hour drive to the North takes you to some of the most stunning lakes in Europe. These are Lakes Como, Maggiore, Lugano and Orta where one can relax and enjoy the views or partake in many of the water sports on offer.
This property is located on the edge of the small village of Mombaldone, in the Piedmont region of North West Italy. The villa is easily accessible by road or rail, just half a kilometre from the main Acqui Terme –Savona Road and has a rail station in the village. Visitors can enjoy the countryside, lakes and coast and are in easy reach of the main cities of the region, i.e. Milan, Turin and Genoa. Although Piedmont is world renowned by food and wine connoisseurs it still remains relatively undiscovered by mainstream tourists.
The villa's location, with the Italian Riviera one hour to the south, and skiing one hour to the west, provides a climate of contrasting seasons, with hot Mediterranean summers and snow filled alpine winters. Springtime brings mild days, when the blossoms and fruit trees burst into bloom, whilst autumn provides a blaze of colour and signals the picking of the grapes from the numerous vineyards across the region.
Mombaldone itself is the only village in the Asti region that is still surrounded by its original walls. The entrance to the ancient village is through a Gothic-style entrance door to the shelter, which has been preserved in its original medieval form. The most important monuments converge on Piazza Umberto at the centre of the village and although the 13th century castle is now little more than a ruin ravaged by time, it is also well worth a visit.
In the village there is a post office, shop, rail station and local bar. The local shop is open every day and supplies all the essentials required for a self-catering holiday including freshly baked bread. The train is a useful and practical way to visit the beautiful, small villages along Italian Riviera; tickets can be purchased from the post office. A 5 minute drive or a 20 minute walk takes you to the village of Montechiaro D'Acqui, where there is a bank, ATM, chemist, butcher, baker, garage, bars, and one of the best pizza restaurants in the area.
Only 20 minutes' drive from the villa is the spa town of Acqui Terme. It is steeped in history, yet has designer shops, boutiques, fabulous restaurants and great cafés as well as a hypermarket where you can purchase everything you may require for your stay.
The thermal water comes to the surface in Piazza Bollente, in the centre of town. People come from miles around to bottle the sulphuric scented water from the fountain, which is heated naturally to 75°C, due to its health giving properties.
Acqui Terme also boasts one of the largest outdoor swimming pools in Europe consisting of 3 linked pools, with areas for the very young, and for those that are very brave with 10 metre diving boards!
The Piedmont area is famed around the world for its selection of fine wines. These include Barolo, Barbaresco, Barbera, Dolcetto and Moscato D'Asti. Many wine tours take place throughout the region and most distilleries welcome visitors to sample their wines on site and take samples away at competitive prices.
Piedmont's local cuisine is renown throughout Italy, the precious white truffles of this region are a special delicacy, with special truffle markets being held in Alba during the autumn months.
Antique Markets are well known throughout the region and usually take place on a weekend.
The local food and household markets are still very much a traditional way of life in Italy and a great way to shop:
There are 3 Golf Courses within 1 hours drive of the Villa that welcome visitors
