About this location
The Northumberland region
Northumberland is a heady combination of fishing villages, market towns, sandy beaches, magnificent castles and historic Hadrian's Wall, tied together by beautiful countryside and abundant wildlife.
The 14th Century bridge that once welcomed travellers through its gates is now for pedestrian use only, but a new bridge takes motorists straight into the town centre. The town itself is made up of terraces of 18th and 19th Century houses built from grey stone and with red roofs. St. Laurence's Church is the only near-complete Norman church in Northumbria and sports a rare 14th Century stone spire. From Warkworth it is also possible to travel upriver by boat to Hermitage, a refuge built by a hermit in the 14th Century. The refuge is hollowed into the face of a cliff and consists of a chapel and two living chambers on separate floors. Warkworth also has its own beach and is within easy reach of further attractions, such as Hadrian's Wall and the Northumberland National Park.
