The North West Ireland region

Achill Island is the biggest Island in Ireland and situated on the west coast of Co Mayo. Knock Airport is about an hour away, Shannon airport a 3 hour journey and Dublin 4 hours, all by car. Achill is a Gaeltacht area where both English and Irish are spoken. The climate is temperate and peaks at around 20 Celsius in summer and is around 8 Celsius during the winter. Achill has many cultural and leisure activities (particularly during the summer), and is situated on the Atlantic side of Co Mayo, which itself has many attractions. Westport a large town an hour's drive from Achill was voted best place to live in Ireland for 2012. Westport which is a big tourist centre has many festivals, parks, pubs, restaurants, and leisure facilities, one of the most famous being Westport House. Castlebar which is more of a commercial town also has many fine restaurants, pubs and interesting places to visit including, the National Museum of Ireland, and Lake Lannagh Hiking Trails.

Achill Island

Achill island is a Gaeltacht area where English and Irish is spoken. Because of its relative remoteness, it has managed to preserve its unspoilt beauty and still has a very relaxing, laid back ambience. The scenery is spectacular by any standards and the Minnaun Hights, the highest cliffs in Europe are about ten minutes drive away. There are many fine beaches and recreational facilities no more than 20 minutes drive away including, watersports, fishing, kite surfing, golfing and cycling paths, and walks. Achill also hosts many art galleries, festival and retaurants.
