The Rhone / French Alps / Haute-Savoie region
The Haute-Savoie region is in the north-eastern Alps on the Franco Swiss border, lying south of Lac Leman (Lake Geneva). Throughout the Savoie Haute-Savoie, you will discover natural surroundings that are as extraordinary as they are grandiose, with stunning lakes, valleys, mountain peaks and passes. You can explore these magnificent landscapes in the national and regional parks and nature reserves, where waterfalls, cirques and gorges add their own stunning contribution to the beauty of the Haute-Savoie.
Haute-Savoie is an outdoor lover's paradise, justifiably well known for skiing, you can also go rock climbing, walking, white water rafting and fishing. There are several golf courses within a 20 minute drive and the region offers many other activities, artistic, cultural and relaxing.
You can enjoy natural and man-made lakes in the region, whether you are interested in swimming, fishing, boating or simply contemplating the beauty of nature. In summer, why not enjoy a picnic alongside one of the region's numerous mountain lakes.
The regions rivers are full of trout and its lakes are home to many species of fish, including members of the salmon family and coarse fish, such as pike or perch.
Centuries of tradition and savoir-faire have created delicious local products and the restaurants are a gourmet's delight - fondues, tartiflettes, raclettes, berthod are all highly recommended. There are locally produced cheeses, sausages, wines and breads all to enjoy.
Should you need a City fix, there are beautiful places along the shores of Lac Leman including Geneva, Lausanne, Montreux and Evian-les-Bains-well known for its famous water. Yvoire is a beautiful medieval village. Chamonix, Mont Blanc and Annecy are all about an hour's drive.
Abondance area
The Chalet is situated in a small hamlet called Bonnevaux, nestled in the Abondance valley. There is local skiing at Drouzin Le Mont and Abondance which can be reached by car within 5 minutes. From Chatel or Morzine you can access the Portes du Soleil which is the largest European skiing area. There are 650 km of slopes 170 km are blue, 380 km red and 100 km black which connect towns such as Avoriaz, Les Gets, Morgins and Champery. Experienced and beginners will find plenty of skiing/boarding here. Those wishing to ski off piste can hire a guide and there are several snow parks for boarders. There is over 240km of crosscountry skiing.
In Chatel and Morzine there are ample facilities for children including Kindergartens and Ski schools.
Outside of the Ski season you can explore the mountains; hiking, mountain biking, via ferrata, up in the air (Parapente, Fantasticable), down in the rivers (fishing, white water sports) or on the lakes (sailing, windsurfing, fishing). Bonnevaux has numerous graded walks ranging from 45mins-4hours. Discover the luxurious mineral spas at Thonon, Evian and Lavey les Bains; easily reached by car.
Abondance is a few minutes by car, with its historical abbey (church, cloisters and religious art museum), and la Maison du Val, the Abondance valley’s heritage centre. There is a lovely market every Wednesday and Sunday morning selling fresh local produce, in particular, Abondance cheese. Here you will find everything you need, Butcher, Bakery, Supermarket, Bank, ski /board Hire, 3 Cafes and 10 Restaurants.
Thonon-les-Bains is also worth a visit (22 km), with its lakeside location, marina, funicular railway, Chateau and beach. You can take a ferry to Lausanne from here, or simply wander around the shops for a flavour of an authentic and attractive French town. In summer it hosts a feast of cultural events.
