The Powys / Brecon Beacons / Monmouthshire region
Famous for its choirs, stunning mountain ranges and beautiful valleys, this wonderful country has something for everyone. Snowdonia National Park, situated in North Wales, boasts breathtaking mountain scenery, crystal clear lakes and cascading waterfalls. Climb Snowdon, which at 1085m is Wales’ highest mountain, or travel to the summit in style on the charming Mountain Railway.
Alternatively, why not sample the beautiful green valley of Llangollen by steam train or from a leisurely horse-drawn canal boat. In July, the annual Llangollen Eisteddfod transforms the town into a unique centre of international music and dance, attracting musicians and singers from across the globe. You could also explore the beautiful coastline, safe sandy beaches and watersports of the Lleyn Peninsula, as well as Colwyn Bay, historic Conwy, Victorian Llandudno or the Isle of Anglesey on the north coast.
To the south, there’s the lovely Brecon Beacons National Park, a haven of rugged moorland, forests and mountains that’s just perfect for nature lovers and walkers. Finally, the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park is renowned for its wildlife, stunning coastal scenery, superb beaches and as the home of Britain’s smallest city, the City of St David’s.
Abergavenny / Gilwern area
The picturesque village of Gilwern, situated amidst the Brecon Beacons National Park, offers visitors many amenities including traditional pubs, shops and a great fish and chip shop. Covering approximately 520 square miles, the National Park surrounds the village providing excellent walking, cycling and bird watching as well as great salmon and trout fishing on the river Usk.
Abergavenny, the aptly named 'Gateway to Wales' is nestled in the nearby hills and has something for everyone. With its many indoor and outdoor markets, magnificent castle and museums this medieval market town is sure to delight any visitor.
Offering fantastic walks for all abilities as well as its own vineyard, the nearby mountain of Sugarloaf is well worth visiting. No matter what time of year, this wonderful little village has something in the area to suit all tastes and budgets.

Very friendly and hospitable owners. Totally self contained, independent and away from main house. Very light and airy. Superb location, quiet and peaceful. Great patio south facing for al fresco breakfast. Everything required within the cottage. Super open fire. Easy access to Brecon Beacons, Abergavenny etc. Mrs Dyas, Bath, Somerset March 2009
Lovely cottage and good value. The field of sheep and lambs opposite was lovely, as was the log fire. Mr Moggridge, Hertford, Hertfordshire March 2009
Location was beautiful, lovely and private, with great views. Garden was really nice and owner very relaxed and allowed us freedom and flexibility with our dog. Layout of property was great and was very warm and cosy. Lots of nice walks nearby. Ms Hancock, Nottingham, Derbyshire February 2009
Great hospitality from the owners. We had such a relaxing stay that we didn't do all the walking we had expected to do! Mrs James, Caersws, Powys February 2009
