Local attractions

Trossachs Self-Catering's properties offer peace and tranquility, and are ideal bases for exploring the beautiful Scottish countryside.

Aberfoyle is a thriving village with lots of attractions for the visitor. Local shops include a Co-op (open until 10.00 pm), post office, butcher's shop and deli, a wonderful little confectioner (the Wee Tablet Shop).

Numerous pubs and restaurants can be found in the village and the surrounding areas of Kinlochard, Callander and Port of Menteith. Monachyle Mhor in Balquhidder is run by Tom Lewis, the well-known chef, and Nick Nairn's Cook School is close by in Port of Menteith. The Wee Blether Tearoom at Kinlochard, offers award-winning home-cooked Scottish fare, and is an easy cycle along the side of Loch Ard.

Aberfoyle has its own golf course. Glencoe, Fort William and Loch Lomond are in easy reach. Stirling Castle, the island of Inchmahome on the Lake of Menteith (and its Augustinian monastery dating from 1238) and Doune Castle (where Monty Python and the Holy Grail was filmed), are all well worth a visit. Rob Roy's Grave is 45 minutes away in Balquhidder.

Aberfoyle

The Trossachs

Trossachs Self-Catering is based in beautiful converted Victorian buildings on the banks of Loch Ard, just three miles from Aberfoyle – on the road to the remote and picturesque eastern shores of Loch Lomond at Inversnaid.

With two main centres at Aberfoyle and Callander, the Trossachs are the very heart of Scotland – between the Lowlands and the Highlands – yet are never more than an hour's drive from the city centres of Edinburgh or Glasgow.

Comprising heather-clad hills, mountains, lochs, glens, woodland trails and burns, the beauty of The Trossachs is breathtaking. The national park is an adventure playground for hillwalkers and outdoor pursuit enthusiasts, while others come simply to gaze – and experience first-hand the glories of Loch Lomond, Ben Lomond, Loch Ard and Loch Katrine.

Wildlife abounds. As well as great salmon and trout fishing, there are roe deer, red deer, red kites, ospreys, peregrine falcons, golden eagles, buzzards, capercaillies, pine martens, red squirrels… even the occasional wildcat.
