The Perth and Kinross region
Aberfeldy is right in the geographical centre of Scotland amidst beautiful scenery and remote wilderness, yet with easy access to the cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow, with Perth only 40 minutes by car. Aberfeldy has plenty of hotels and restaurants plus all the amenities such as banks and shops which you expect in a small country town. There is a newly opened sports centre with gym, large indoor pool and jacuzzi, also a new Arthouse cinema 'The Birks' with bar and restaurant has just opened. There are beautiful walks from the door of the cottage including the famous 'Birks of Aberfeldy' a lovely waterfall walk. The mighty River Tay is a five minute walk away with an adventure centre nearby offering climbing, canoeing, white water rafting etc. If your taste is for quieter activities the award winning bookshop and art gallery The Watermill is five minutes walk away together with other quirky and original shops and cafes.
Ten minutes by car is the pretty village of Kenmore with excellent shops and restaurants, plus water activities on Loch Tay, or you could just swim and relax on the beach. The famous town of Pitlochry is around 20 minutes away by car, where there is the delightful Festival Theatre, the Explorers garden celebrating the famous plant collectors of Perthshire. Dunkeld and The Hermitage are close by with beautiful walks along the River Braan, the Birnam Oak and more good shops and hotels. Blair Castle is not far distant along with the famous House of Bruar the 'Harrods of the North'!
For keen walkers there are many Munros within easy distance, bike hire is easy for a relaxing cycle ride or a more strenuous mountain biking session. The famous closed road cycle race the Etape Caledonian is held in the area every May. Aberfeldy Show is in the middle of August and is a typical and charming local show with horse and pony events, Highland Games, agricultural and local events.
Fishing is popular with salmon and trout on the River Tay.
Every October a famous 'son et lumiere' event is held in Faskaly Forest at Pitlochry and is entitled The Enchanted Forest - this is an event not to be missed, as is the wonderful Perthsire Amber Folk Festival held at the beginning of November each year, hosted by that national treasure Dougie MacLean.

"Excellent cottage & location for exploring the region"
The first thing that struck me after having a quick inspection upon arrival, was how spotlessly clean everywhere was.The kitchen is well equipped. The quality of the fixture and fittings were very good and the rooms were spacious. We chose this cottage because of location mainly, and in that regard it acted as an excellent base for exploring the area, and being a few minutes walk from the town and its facilities. The owners were very helpful & easy to correspond with also.

"Lovely, comfortable and convenient"
Capercaille Cottage is one of the best holiday cottages I have ever rented. It is extremely comfortable, well equipped and convenient for the shops in Aberfeldy. It's also close to some stunning scenery and wonderful places to visit. I travelled with two elderly relatives and they found the layout and big bathrooms particularly comfortable, though the steps up to the property would probably not be suitable for wheel chair users or someone with more sever disability. Overall I would describe the cottage as a lovely home from home..... only better!

"Great central Highlands location"
There was plenty of room for four women to establish our spaces and be comfortable. It would have been nice to have had a dryer for our laundry, but there were several hanging racks for us to use. We were not left with instructions for the use of window and door keys; that would have been quite helpful.

"High standard with great location"
We love Perthshire & chose Capercaillie cottage in Aberfeldy, as it offered a great base to visit the wider area, could accommodate 6 & we could take the dog. The cottage itself (which really should be more accurately described as a bungalo ) is in a great location in a very quiet cul-de sac at the western edge of the village. The River Tay, the village centre & the famous "Birks" all within ten minutes walk. Capercaillie was extremely well equipped, furnished to a high standard with good quality fittings (particularly bathroom / shower room) & spotless. Storage space was also good & the house large enough to accommodate 6 without any problem.
As things worked out, there were only 4 of us for the first half of the week then only my wife & I with grandson for the remainder - plus dog of course.
We were lucky enough to visit just as the Summer heat wave arrived, so it was very hot all week. When we were not out & about, we spent all of the time out on the decking at the rear of the house which also had table, chairs & sun parasol, which we used for all meals we had there. The rear garden was fully enclosed & quite a suntrap. Unlikely we will get such tremendous weather next time & be able to use the other areas of the house too.
