The Galicia region

Galicia is the province in the North West corner of Spain that has a wonderful coastline and a temperate climate making it very green. It is still unspoilt by tourism and you can find all sorts of wonderful architecture, great food, fantastic scenery, idyllic (and vast) beaches, and of course, many fiestas. It is where the Spanish come on holiday so it really only gets very busy during July and August. The rest of the year it is relatively quiet but well worth visiting. It is easy to get to with flights to Asturias airport near Oviedo. This is just over an hours drive from Granero del Burro. If you want to bring your car, you can travel with Brittany Ferries to Santander. This is just over 3 hours away.

The Camino de Santiago passes within a few kilometres of the barn on its way to the world famous Santiago de Compostela. There is also the renowned Las Catedrales beach only 20 minutes away, which is the second most visited tourist attraction in Galicia.

The food is really worth a mention and the restaurants are open all year round. Fish and seafood are the coastal specialities, but inland there is a much more rustic cuisine. There is something for all tastes.

A Coruna

The area around Granero del Burro is very rural and in many ways very rustic. People have lived here all their lives and still live off the land using traditional farming methods. They are tight knit communities with people depending on each other on a daily basis. They are however very kind people and welcome outsiders into their communities with open arms. Vidal is no exception to this with 18 houses and an average age of over 60. However, as a place to come on holiday it is great because you can mix this relaxed and traditional environment with some of the finest beaches in Northern Spain just 20 minutes away. Over the border into Asturias (only 12km away) there is great walking and rustic food, mixed with abandoned villages and restored water mills. The main road is only 2 km away from the barn so it is easy to travel inland or to the coast.

If you are looking for a real mixed bag of things to do and see, coupled with a tranquil location, then corner of Galicia is perfect for you.

"Exceptionally tranquil and private location - perfect for relaxing and al fresco dining."

We were hoping for a "perfect hideaway" where we could relax, eat outside, enjoy the views and be undisturbed by noise or neighbours. The Granero del Burro offers exactly that. In addition, the kitchen is the most luxurious and well-equipped kitchen we have ever had on a self-catering holiday, so once the shopping is done, there is definitely no reason to go out anymore! We thoroughly enjoyed sitting out until darkness fell, watching the stars and listening to the owls in the distance. Bliss.

"Terrific accommodation in a beautiful setting"

The granero was terrific. Good sized accommodation in a tranquil setting. It had all amenities we expected and needed. We even tried out the mobile supermarket van which came up the road outside! The bread oven area was indispensible, eating the majority of our meals out there.

Directions to find the place on arrival were perfect and being met as we arrived was really great even when we arrived from the Brittany Ferry about 23:00.

The weather was ideal, warm, but not too hot. We went to a different beach pretty much every day. There are so many across that north coast and the seafood was great. We all enjoyed it.

Would I wish for more? Yes, but it's only marginal - the internet speed was a bit slow.

"Terrific and quiet place to stay for a few weeks"

Granero del Burro is a lovely barn , very new and modern with the best utilised kitchen I have ever seen in a rented place. The view and quietness are superb, the owner very kind and helpfull.
We enjoyed staying there very much and felt sorry that we had to move on after 1 week.

"Most high standard accomodation in a gem of an area of Spain"

This was our first time in Green Spain and we now wonder why it took us so long. The combination of top quality facilities in a relaxing and luxurious home ( this is the owners own house for most of the year) and a surprisingly beautiful region made for a special holiday.Dont go if you want fish and chips and fun fairs but relaxation ,quiet and scenery are the order of the day.Eat out on Menu da dia for from 10 Euros each, often with a full bottle of decent wine, sea food a speciality, close to lots of interesting towns, cities and sites. Only problem getting the balance of relaxing and sightseeing right. Granero is all you could wish for; English owners mean they cater for English requirements, all mod cons, great kitchen area, open plan, large grounds and outdoor bbq and loungers.
