“A World Traveler's opinion - it's better than described” I travel a lot for work; in 30 years I've stayed in everything you can imagine; Four Seasons in Italy, Maui resorts, villas in the Caribbean, hammocks in Mexico. This was perfect to make our vacation whatever we wanted. The 1 review about the rundown community was misleading. This is the DR, not Florida. Please, if that's what you expect, go there and don't give americans more of a bad reputation than we already have. Yes, you'll see some vacant buildings, quaint restaurants and beautiful homes. The DR is a developing country, and if you want to be a good citizen of our World, show some respect for that. There are poor areas (I didn't really see that), but I've seen much, much worse in Mexico, Dominica, St. Thomas, and Barbados. It's just... different. The owner was excellent, the house is nicer than the pics. Weather - perfect every day. "Beachfront" means 1 step from the backyard to the beach; quiet, not deserted. 2 min. walk to slightly more populated beach; little restaurants, thatched-roof palapas, great swimming. Great for kids, swim in the easily identified white-sand areas (bring a mask/snorkel and you'll easily identify where coral and sea urchins are further out). The gated community is safe, several English-speaking restaurants/shops. You could spend your entire time without leaving, but if that's your plan... go to Florida, please. We explored every day. If you haven't traveled much outside your country, but want to experience something idyllic, slightly exotic, and relatively quiet, this may be a good place to start. Just use your head and do some research. And if you have traveled, enjoy. A big smile and "Hola" goes a long way. A little Spanish helps tremendously. Mine was rusty, but when seeking directions in Puerto Plata, a shop owner walked us two blocks to the store I was looking for, and left me with a warm smile and a handshake. “One of our greatest months.” I stayed at Suncamp with my husband and young child. We planned on volunteering and studying Spanish, in addition to relaxing and enjoying paradise. Success. Suncamp is like a little version of paradise for the adventurous traveler. There are no resorts, no pools, no all you can eat buffets. Instead, you get quiet, a warm river to swim in at your leisure, and the company of amazing travelers from around the globe. The restaurant was a great place to hang out and socialize, while eating a fantastic meal. The location is amazing. Away from the busy resorts of Puerto Plata, tucked back behind a quaint and friendly little village. Public transportation will have you in the city in no time, but there are also places around to get food and other necessities. It was so strange to wake up every single day that were there and feel like I was in a tropical haven. My daughter loved it there and still tells me she misses "Diane's place." The place is simple, which is what we wanted. No air conditioning, no sterility. Just beauty and peace. The locals are friendly, the volunteer opportunities allow you to feel like you're truly contributing, and the other activities you can set up keep you busy. We did the 27 Waterfalls and horseback riding -- both are amazing! I couldn't recommend this place enough!

“Pleasant Stay” My wife & I stayed with Michael and Berta in the one bedroom suite for 6 weeks and enjoyed our stay. It is a quiet neighbourhood with easy access via cheap taxi to Puerto Plata. Michael personally led us on some tours which we really enjoyed and were most economical. We felt very safe, especially with Blackie the shepherd dog on guard. We got a short term membership at the golf club gym which entitles you to use the pool. Lots of restaurants within walking. We did not have nor need a car rental.For 2 weeks, my wife's sister and niece joined us in the adjacent studio apartment, which was cozy with us all together. We met some great neighbours from around the world alternating in the studio as well. Michael and Berta were great at directing us to various sites to see and amenities that were needed. Very economical choice of accommodation.
