Provence is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world, with its blend of sun-baked hilltop villages and glamorous resorts like St Tropez and Nice. The revived port of Marseille and ancient Papal seat of Avignon make this area as varied culturally as it is naturally. Much of Provence is wild, shooting of wild boar being a particularly popular pastime. Marineland with its huge whale pool and variety of marine life draws in the crowds, and Roman remains at Orange and Arles add to the region’s historical pull.
