Just six per cent of pet owning holidaymakers have arranged for their pets to have EU Pet Passports, according to a survey by holidaylettings.co.uk, the UK’s leading holiday home website. The majority of pet owners (58 per cent) opt to leave their animals with friends or get a house sitter, so as to disturb their pet’s routine as little as possible. However, 1 in 5 privately owned holiday homes available for short term rental through holidaylettings.co.uk invites pets to stay.

Holidaylettings.co.uk advertises over 25,000 holiday homes around the world, but it is not British holiday home landlords that lead the way with this invitation to pet owners. Interestingly, over a thousand homes in France welcome guests travelling with pets, while Spain, Italy and the UK also have a significant number of pet-friendly self-catering properties.

The Pet Travel Scheme (PETS) enables owners of dogs, cats and ferrets to vaccinate and microchip their pets and travel with them to countries throughout the EU, yet 28 per cent of owners still prefer to use kennels or catteries when they leave moggie at home.

Ross Elder, managing director of holidaylettings.co.uk comments: “It tends to be property owners who have or like pets that welcome them into their holiday home, but a simple set of rules for guests such as no pets in the bedrooms and pet food or treats only to be eaten in the kitchen or outside, will ensure that guests and their pets respect your property.”
