A 17 km stretch of coastline near the Cabo de Gata nature reserve in Almeria has been heralded the best beach in Spain by the 2008 International Tourism Exhibition (FITUR) in Madrid. Thought to have once been popular with pirates and smugglers these miles of blue flag sands are as yet little known by holidaymakers and unspoilt by over development. Also favoured by Hollywood directors, films including Lawrence of Arabia have been shot at nearby beaches Genovese and Monsul.

El Cazador (Home 18367)
A traditional Andalucian cortijo set amidst the 11 acre Finca Los Tigres with 360 degree views. Perched on its promontory, three sides of the house have terraces and the patio and pool areas are built of natural stone. The farmhouse sleeps six from £540 per week.

Los Palmitos (Home 29529)
Nestled within the conservation area of Cabo de Gata-Nijar Nature Reserve this secluded finca has a roof terrace for al fresco dining, heated pool, whirlpool, brick barbecue, under floor heating and very little interruption from its nearest neighbours – a herd of cattle. It sleeps six from £500 per week.

Mirador (Home 24369)
If you’re looking for something a bit more mainstream or less secluded, Mirador is a two bedroom apartment in residential Retamar with shared pool, landscaped gardens, children’s parks and the Alborian championship golf course. Prices from £300 per week.

N.B. For those inclined, the nudist beach in Los Muertos is a short boat ride or hike through the nature reserve!
