This week we’re looking at historic places and sites around Europe, and some fabulous self-catering places to stay nearby.

THE ACROPOLIS, ATHENS, GREECE


The Acropolis, or citadel, of Athens is a flat-topped rock that rises 150m above sea level with a surface area of about three hectares. It’s probably Greece’s most famous cultural landmark.

The Palais des Papes in Avignon is a historical palace, formerly the popes’ residence and one of the largest and most important medieval Gothic buildings in Europe.

STONEHENGE, SALISBURY, WILTSHIRE, UK


The famous Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument composed of a circular setting of large standing stones set within earthworks. It’s at the centre of the most dense complex of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments in England, and includes several hundred burial mounds.

Where to stay

THE OLD CITY WALLS, DUBROVNIK, CROATIA


Dubrovnik’s famous ancient city walls run almost two kilometres around the city. Up to six metres thick in places, this complex structure consists of a series of forts, bastions, casemates, towers and detached forts.

ALHAMBRA, GRANADA, SPAIN


The Alhambra is a palace and fortress complex located in Granada. It was constructed during the mid 14th century by the Berber rulers of the Emirate of Granada in al-Andalus and occupies the top of the hill of the Assabica on the south-eastern border of the city of Granada.

Where to stay
This unique cave house is located at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, just eight kilometres from the city of Granada. The property is fully equipped with beautiful views of the picturesque town of Monachil, with its many bars and restaurants.

KRAKOW OLD TOWN, POLAND


Picturesque Krakow Old Town is the historic central district of the city and was the centre of Poland's political life from 1038 until King Sigismund III Vasa relocated his court to Warsaw in 1596.

PANTHEON, ROME, ITALY


The Pantheon is a circular Roman building with a portico of large granite Corinthian columns, commissioned by Marcus Agrippa as a temple to all the gods of Ancient Rome. It is one of the best preserved of all Roman buildings and has been in continuous use throughout its history.
