Wonderful base for exploring Italian/French Riviera & Maritime Alps

Having previously stayed in several villages along the Ligurian coast we were looking for a village with a few more facilities on the door step and a less perilous drive to reach it. Pigna was the perfect answer. Its baker, grocers and small selection bars/restaurants meant we didn’t have to drive somewhere every night. The perfect base for exploring the sophistication of Nice, Monte Carlo and San Remo but also all the charming historic villages of the coast and hills. The house is typical of the area with quite a climb to the top floor but well worth it for the amazing views over the ancient pan tiled roofs and church tower towards the mountains. It is charming and comfortable with everything you could need – so pleasant that we stayed in several nights and cooked some of the fantastic local ingredients. Best bits – the mountains, the wonderful bread and pastries from the baker and the late limoncello digestifs with the staff at the bar. We plan return next year. … see more

I had booked our holiday almost a year in advance having seen Pigna featured on a Place in the Sun. Ian and Sue's house seemed perfect as it offered lots of indoor and outdoor space for me,my husband and two children aged 13 and 10 and was situated in the old winding streets so was central to the cafe's and restaurants but gave a real sense of going back in time as well as feeling like you lived there ( wishful thinking ! ). I was looking forward to the holiday so much I was worried it might not live up to our expectations - In fact it surpassed them and I loved everything about Pigna and the house and whilst I usually like to visit different places the only question is when we will be re booking. The information supplied by Ian and Sue beforehand and in the Villa was so helpful - my family joked with me that I was forever reading the " bible". There was so much to do and whilst we managed to visit Rock Pools ( stunning ), the beach at Menton and San Remo, Monaco and Monte Carlo and many of the picturesque neighbouring villages, experienced a festival in Pigna which my husband loved dancing at ! I feel I have to return as there is so much more to do/ see. We enjoyed the food, wine and fantastic variety of restaurants., we found the prices unbelievably reasonable unless you went to the more touristy places which is only to be expected, The local cafe Des el Roy did the most amazing pastries, cakes and coffee and Ice creams and again we couldn't believe the prices. Our children loved the holiday we all agreed it was our best yet and as I said we are already arguing about when to go back. Before booking Ian warned about booking car hire outside of the airport terminal, I stupidly booked a car with Touché based at the Park Inn hotel opposite terminal 1, our flight was 2 hours late but even so we arrived before 9pm and the desk was closed so just a warning to avoid this company, there are plenty of others at the airport. So it's just left to say a massive thank you to Ian Sue and Penny for introducing us to this lovely unspolt place and your gorgeous holiday home which offers so much more than just a holiday rental. Wine on arrival, comfy beds even medical supplies, great selection of books and DVDS if you wanted them. Thanks also to Georgia who met us and provided lots of helpful advise, she is English maintains a Birmingham accent but lives in Pigna so am very envious. I loved getting up in the morning opening the bedroom door onto the balcony and looking up at the village Castel Vittoria on the hill opposite and seeing the Sun light it up. My mornings back in Ramsbottom just don't have the same effect !! … see more
