You don’t want to leave your loyal companion while you sail away for a week or two and now, thanks to PETS, pet-inclusive holidays are now a realistic option. The Pet Travel Scheme (PETS) was launched in 2000 and allows cats and dogs to re-enter the UK without quarantine (see the tips below for more details).

While many holiday companies will not allow you to take any pet away with you to their holiday resort or package location, many holiday home owners will be happy to welcome your furry friend.

Have a peek at all our pet friendly accommodation that may be suitable for your next trip - if you're holidaying at home, pet friendly cottages in England are a good place to start, or hop on the ferry after booking some pet friendly accommodation in France. Please read the details of each advert carefully and check with the owner that Fido or Felix will definitely be welcome.

Top Tips

  • Have your pet fitted with a microchip at your local veterinary surgery.
  • After the microchip has been fitted your pet must be vaccinated against rabies.
  • Check that the vaccine has given a satisfactory level of protection against rabies with a blood test.
  • There is a mandatory six month waiting period between the rabies vaccination and blood test, and the permit to travel.
  • Your pet can then be issued with an official PETS certificate if you follow their guidelines.
  • Your pet must be treated against tapeworm and ticks 24-48 hours before you re-enter the UK and issued with an official certificate of treatment.
  • Remember that your pet will not be allowed to travel without prior booking and may be confined to the car.
  • You cannot bring a pet into the UK under the Pet Travel Scheme from a private boat or plane.
  • Many airlines will not transport pets, neither does Eurostar, although Eurotunnel and most ferry routes will, provided they remain inside your car. (The Pet Travel Scheme operates on a number of routes.)
  • You may want to consider taking out an insurance policy for your pet to cover your furry friend whilst travelling abroad.
  • Take your pet's own bedding and any small favourite toys to help your companion feel at home at the holiday destination and enjoy the break too.
