If you want to get away from it all, the Midi-Pyréenés is the largest official region of France, offering stunning vistas, good summer weather and a unique landscape. The ski resorts on the Spanish border offer an economical alternative to those of the French Alps, and this area is dotted with thermal resorts. The gorges of the Aveyron and numerous grottoes and the lofty meadows of the Pyrenees National Park also draw people to the region, and the Massif Central is celebrated here for its potholing. The university town of Toulouse offers a vibrant host of music events and festivals in the summer, and the excellent planetarium at the Cité de Espace will fascinate children. This area produces the famous Roquefort cheese and the distinctive ‘black’ wine of historic Cahors is not to be missed. The Midi-Pyrénées is also the home of the distilleries of Armagnac. Millions of visitors follow in the footsteps of pilgrims before them in making a visit to the shrine at Lourdes every year for worship and prayer.
