Menorca still has the traces of its prehistoric past in the monuments - known as Talayots - that scatter its landscape. The best preserved monuments are to be found at the Trepucó site. The island’s capital Mahón is best explored on foot, with a great fish market and the Museu de Menorca. The presence of British troops here in the past shows in the architecture, and in the gin making which they introduced to the island. You can sample the best of the island’s gin at the Xoriguer distillery. Mahón also gave its name to mayonnaise, which was taken from here by the French troops. Cuitadella has fine Baroque and Gothic churches. The town has a violent past, having been rebuilt by Roman, Moorish and Catalan invaders. There are beautiful cove beaches within easy reach of the town.
